Re: Landry is MIA

Im fine with players staying home this time of year. I'd rather they be there, but I feel like after a 16+ game season, your body takes a beating. Give it a bit longer to recover. All they do is lift or run.

However, there's no excuse to ever not call the coach back. I can not condone that. Always call the coach/owner/gm back immediately.

That is total bullshit. You make that kind of money to play a frigging game, you should make an all out effort to get in shape, and show up for any team functions that might help with team cohesion and shaking the off season rust off. 16 games is nothing compared to the NBA or the NHL. All this shows me is the guy isn't all that into winning. A non chalant attitude among your starters comng off an abysmal 8-8 season tells me we might not have much to look forward to in '09.

Kinda funny how Springs got ripped a new one for doing the same thing, but Landry seems to get a pass. Interesting.

Personally I don't have a problem with players skipping out on voluntary workouts.

Is it the same thing though? Springs, in my opinion, shouldn't have gotten much grief. He's a proven veteran who was working out on his own in Arizona while trying to take care of sick family members at the same time. Plus, best as I can recall, he kept in communication with the team. Is the same thing going on with Landry? Doesn't seem that way.

Maybe he's out on the bayou rasslin' gators with Patrick Ramsey

I could be wrong but I thought Springs wasn't returning calls or texts from Zorn last year.

You're probably right, I lose track of who's calling who. But i thought I remember he was in touch with someone from the Redskins.

I don't generally have a problem with it, but as I pointed out in the OTA thread, he's literally the only player not there. So that's kind of a bummer. When every single player has the work ethic to show up, and one of our star players who I was hoping would have an interest in becoming a leader is MIA and doesn't even have the courtesy to return a phone call/text message.

Like SS said though, it's how he rolls. He seems like a douche.

What the hell??

Anyway, why would Landry want out? He is one of the highest paid safeties in the league and has done nothing to deserve a new deal. This is meaningless.

I think it is more embarassing that our head coach admits to the national media that one of his players is ignoring him.

I know we probably shouldnt give this any cred at all, but more tha one person has evidently suggested to Florio that Landry's endgame is not showing up on the field for the Redskins on Sundays (and the occasional Monday) in the fall:

But is there a deeper issue? We’ve heard some suggestions that perhaps there could be, and whispers that Landry possibly wants out of D.C.

Indeed, the organization apparently assumes that Landry is working out a couple thousand miles from Redskins Park. “You don’t go to Arizona to become a player; maybe to get in shape but not to become a player,” Jackson said Wednesday.

But we’ve been told that, at least at times, Landry has been hanging out in the Washington area.

So we’ll keep an eye on this one. In the end, the player picked right before Adrian Peterson could be playing for another team.
IF (notice the bold) Landry feels, like many of us do, that Jackson isnt taking advantage of his skills in the current scheme (Landry should be playing SS, not FS), then I could see him wanting out. As a practical matter, if Landry isnt used properly, then it minimizes his ability to reach his maximum potential, go to pro-bowls, and ultimately get the biggest contract extension when his rookie deal expires.

Hopefully, this is just a baseless rumor. However, while its possible Landry may not want out of D.C., i tend to think there's more to Landrys absence than meets the eye.

Nothing like a good old June conspiracy theory from PFT. He didn't show up for most of last year either, this isn't a big deal. If he had skipped the mandatory mini camp and/or holds out of training camp let me know, until there it's a whole bunch of nothing.

Why would anyone including Laron Landry think he should be playing SS? That would be a tremendous waste of the fact that Landry is

a)the #1 fastest safety in the entire league. The resource of elite speed is best allocated to the essential coverage of open space responsibilities that are the paramount role of any safety in the first place.

b)not quite big enough to dish out punishment on the likes of Brandon Jacobs and Marion Barber without breaking down during the course of a season with the full time run stopping duties of a SS in the NFC East.

Landry is very versatile and could be a good SS, but it would be a massive waste of his talent which is 100% suited to FS in the NFL.
