I'd put Cofield on average to slightly above average. With all of the actual liabilities on this defense, he's probably one of the most likely players to keep his spot going into next season.
true . . . but to find them you have to try . . . look at how dominant Vince Wilfork was last night . . . he was just a beast and ate up 2 - 3 blockers and still batted down passers, made tackles and pressured the QB . . . Thats what we NEED . . . thats what a 3-4 defense NEEDS to be good

Cofield is a really good player and our front 3 d-linemen have done a good job against the run before the Ravens game. I think where he lacks as a NT is being able to take up two blockers and collapse the pocket. I hope Baker can develop into that space eating NT.

i agree . . . unfortunately that is the role of a NT in the 3 - 4 . . . to occupy multiple blockers and get push up the middle . . . that's his job . . .

and we have not been good run defense . . . our over run d ranking is due to teams not running against us because our offense scores and its very easy to pass on us . . . look at opposing yards per carry . . . 4.2 . . . that's 15th . . . that's middle of the pack and that's without backs being able to just grind it out and get into a rhythm due to lack of carries . . .

I think haslett runs a different version of the 34, that's more of a 1 GAP defense rather than the traditional 34.

still could use at least 1 space eater type dt. what we have now are 3 good DEs at the line.
imo

I think we still need a 3-4 end that can apply pressure. Of course that used to be Carriker's job but he got hurt but can we upgrade over the other d-linemen we have? We definitively can. Houston runs a one gap scheme that is why Watt is so good because he fits that scheme perfectly, just like Bruce Smith from the olden days. Building depth on the d-line should be a high priority this off season.

I thought our DL was actually doing pretty well, that the Ravens have a good OL, that it's the edge pressure we're lacking since Rak went down and Kerrigan slumped.

Cofield is having a very good year. He has 2 less sacks than last year but he's doing his job up front. He's also had 1 forced fumble. Has Baker subbed for Cofield at NT at any point this season? When Baker has gotten into games he's played either LE or RE.

I never said he's not a good player. Honestly, I think Cofield would be an AMAZING defensive end in our scheme, especially against the run, but he'd also big huge in pass rush.

I didn't say you said he wasn't a good player, Ruskins.

Cofield is not a convential NFL NT. He played at 306 last season and he's up to 318 this season. He played NT @ Northwestern before being drafted by the NYG for his ability to penetrate against the offensive line. Conventional NT or not, Cofield is a great defensive linemen but I don't see him playing any other place along the defensive front except NT.

You should watch more games, and stop listening or reading all these blogs that talk about Coefield not being "conventional" at the NT position. He's been there for a while now, and he's one of our solid defensive players we actually have at the moment. He had a great game yesterday, and is at on par with some of the greats? No, but we can't have Hall of Fame'rs at every position.
