Since the defense is usually ahead of the offense early in the season, and there wasn't as much time to get ready this year, what would this be attributed to? I wonder if the fact that there are so many calls against the defense for hitting the QB and "defenseless" WR's has anything to do with it? Or is it Cam Newton?

Good observations, I do think that the incorporation of rules that in effect, "tie the defenses' hands", in terms of plays that they can and cannot make, are leading to these high octane offensive numbers. Maybe a little Cam Newton sprinkled in there as well.
