Re: 2011 NFL Draft
I think our biggest concern on the line is the interior line with both guard positions and a center. I think GTripp made a post in another thread about Shanny's draft history with linemen. With the exception of LT, all his interior linemen have been drafted in rounds 4-6 and only one was a bust. Sounds like we can have our cake and eat it too? However I do agree with you that if we take AJ Green we start down the Detroit path which is a place I do not care to go.

Anyway all kidding aside, that wasn't exactly the most comprehensive list. Basically what I was showing was a combination of the most successful and noteworthy lineman drafted by Shanahan during his time in Denver. In fact I thought I had left out a large amount of lineman drafted by Shanahan during his tenure in Denver only to find out that I had left out a measly 5 players. Two of which have gone on to have productive NFL careers. I've updated the list to include the 5 draft picks I left out Quote:
Only 4 were quickly in and out of the league. So with that said I guess theres a good chance that either Cook or Capers will make something of themselves, though it should be noted that some of the guys listed above rode the bench for as long as 4 years before getting a chance.

Re: 2011 NFL Draft
If AJ Green drops to us we need to pick this guy up. Our defense at best next year will still be the middle of the pack, and we can't keep scoring 19.2 points a game if we expect to win more the 50% of our games. So we are going to need the weapons on offense.
Torain proved to be a solid RB this year averaging well over 4 yards a carry, and with more weapons like Moss, Green, Armstrong, Davis, Cooley... Even a journeyman like Grossman can look multiple times better then he is. Thats not including guys like Austin, or Banks who may step up on the WR end next year. I remember Moss being a return guy only, and transformed into a great WR. Same as Steve Smith, and Devin hester who have become solid/good ones as well. If Green doesn't fall to us then we need to go defense with Marcell Dareus. We need someone else on the Dline who can wreck havok, and help Orakpo and Fletcher make plays. Ryan Kerrigan is also a beast I would like to see playing for the Skins. Could you imagine Orakpe, Fletcher, Riley, Kerrigan as our LB's? If we are really going the Steeler defense route then it's all about the LB's, and that would be a great move in that direction I guess we will see what will happen, but I would rather have the great pieces in place for our next QB then putting a QB in now, and building around him. |

Re: 2011 NFL Draft
So how do we feel about Ryan Mallet? I've seen a couple of highlight tapes and I'm awestruck by his ability. Especially the jump between this year and last year. To me he's like a hybrid of Joe Flacco and Big Ben. Unfortunately in interviews he doesn't seem to be all there and this is coming from a guy that frequently doesn't look like he's all there. Personally the interview part of the combine is probably going to hurt his stock which he'll probably balance out with a great performance in the drills or throwing at his pro day.

Re: 2011 NFL Draft
By the way one more thing this team needs is to use a mid round pick on a running back. I'm sure theres someone graded out in that 4-6 range that could be a healthier version of Torrain.

Re: 2011 NFL Draft
Agreed. I would say Shanny has an okay past in finding late round RB gems.

Being a Maryland fan, I know I'm biased, but I really think a guy that could be had late that could turn into a beast is Da'Rel Scott. He reminds me a bit of a poor mans Clinton Portis when he was first drafted. Outstanding speed and quickness, not overly big (5'11" 200lbs) and has some shiftiness. He could probably be had in the late rounds or possibly even as a FA but I feel he'll probably get drafted in the 6-7th round area. |

Re: 2011 NFL Draft
I don't know about Mallet, but I love that kid Blackmon and his teammate Kendall at rb for Okie st. Both of those kids are ballers. Honestly I don't know if I like very many QB's that are coming out this year other than Luck, and it doesn't look like he will be there by the time we pick.

Re: 2011 NFL Draft
Last I heard, Blackmon's not coming out. Current buzz is we hope to trade down to still get a QB and someone who can complement Orakpo. Looking for another pass rusher. Defense, rightly so, feels predictable when Orakpo is out there. Coaches felt one reason they played well this weekend was because the Jags didn't know what to expect with Alexander, Wilson, and Jackson.
