KOZ (Not sure of the ailment, but he will be missed) out of the lineup for tonights matchup vs. LA.

Lingering problems with Johnson could become a problem. We might have to call up the kid from Hersey or make a move. Certainly if Johnson decides to have surgery on the hip. Even as well as Theo is playing you need solid backup going into the playoff stretch & even more so in the playoffs you need depth between the pipes.

Re: Washington Capitals 2008-2009 ongoing thread

Our goaltending and defense has been shitty lately. Green is awesome, but he can't do it alone and he's been playing a ton lately.

I think Varlamov and/or Neuvirth are going to start seeing some time soon in between the pipes. Theodore looked shitty tonight.

Re: Washington Capitals 2008-2009 ongoing thread

The CAPS had two periods (40 minutes of bad hockey) and managed to stay in the game. In the 5-4 losing cause.

If they would have played with half the intensity after they woke up in the third period they would have crushed the kings.

With that said you can't sleep walk through 2/3 rd's of the game and usually come out on top, but damn they came close. And in the last minute+ of the game it was all CAPS and Quick saved there ass with some unreal saves! He played lights out.

Tough and unusual loss on home ice. And OVY got his 200th career goal tonight. I would have much rather had the WIN....but kudos to the GREAT ONE!

Fla. will pay the price Saturday night!

I was texting my buddies during the 3rd period like "where has that intensity been all night??" And yeah, Quick was standing on his friggin head tonight. Kid's a rookie, too. That barrage he withstood at the very end of the game was impressive. A tip of the hat to him.

What an awesome penalty kill to win that game. Especially during the Panther's 2-man advantage. Just a sick, sick penalty kill. Those guys were on fumes too. They needed a line change desperately and still held on.

Huge win. Rock that RED!

Re: Washington Capitals 2008-2009 ongoing thread

Forgot last pm, heck of a game between the pipes for Theo. He's starting to really look like the guy the CAPS hoped he be. GREAT JOB!

Next game, Wednesday pm vs. Rangers.

News and notes from last nights win from the CAPS Insider:

Caps 3, Panthers 1

There was an all-too-familiar feeling in Verizon Center when Shaone Morrisonn was whistled for a 5-minute major and a 10-minute game misconduct for checking from behind with 5:01 remaining in regulation. The Capitals would have to kill a 5-on-3 for the fifth straight game, then face a regular power play the rest of the way, testing the penalty killing unit that had given up a goal in 13 straight games.

"It was embarrassing for us," said David Steckel, who was on the ice for three shifts and 3:01 after Morrisonn's penalty. "That's not the kind of records you want to set, letting one go in 13 games in a row. That was important for us tonight. It was just time for that to end. The three guys who were out there knew we needed to get it done, because we haven't in the last few games when we've been down two men before."

*The Panthers recorded just one shot in those final five minutes as the Capitals penalty killers blocked six shots -- Steckel and Tom Poti each had two while Nicklas Backstrom and Karl Alzner both had one -- to finally snap the streak as Washington held an opponent without a power play goal since Jan. 3 to close out a 3-1 win over Florida.

"It was a matter of time. Eventually that streak had to end," Bruce Boudreau said. "It wasn't a very smart play by Mo and it's one thing that we're excited, that we're killing it, we're doing a great job, but you've got to be able to control your emotions out there. It was definitely a five-minute penalty. I thought the penalty killers did a tremendous job."

On to the rest of tonight's notes...

Re: Washington Capitals 2008-2009 ongoing thread

CAPS have a 5:00 showdown with the closest team in the South East to them the Panthers. BIG GAME!

Have to show them who the dominate team in the SouthEast/East for that matter is. We need to win this game and get some separation from the Panthers they trial the CAPS by 11 points in the SE.

Today's Lineup

Less than 24 hours after last night's 5-1 throttling of the Lightning in Tampa, the Caps are back at it - but with several changes to the lineup. Jose Theodore will start in goal. Jay Beagle, Milan Jurcina and Karl Alzner are back in. Michael Nylander, John Erskine and Staffan Kronwall are out (healthy), and Viktor Kozlov will miss his fifth game with a groin muscle pull.

Here's how they should line up:

Forwards
Ovechkin-Backstrom-Semin
Fleischmann-Fedorov-Fehr
Laich-Steckel-Gordon
Brashear-Beagle-Bradley

Defensemen
Morrisonn-Green
Alzner-Poti
Schultz-Jurcina

Green can tie the franchise record for consecutive games with a goal tonight (the record is nine). Bruce Boudreau, meantime, thinks this game is really important from a psychological standpoint. The Caps have a 11-point lead on the Panthers.

"They're catching us [but] we can really do a number on them if we beat them," he said. "And we just want to establish dominance over a team. We haven't done it. We're 1-1 against these guys. [But] it's very big, psychologically, to win these games.

GO CAPS!!!!!

I've recently discovered that amazingly enough I actually get a pretty clear signal of 1500 AM (Federal News Radio) from DC up here in Connecticut, so I no longer have to listen to the Rangers or Devils at night on my drive home. Now can I listen to the Caps...it's awesome!

Thats way cool smoot!

Todays game was off the hook! The CAPS made this one interesting....but got serious with 2 minutes left.

Then it turned into the GREAT 8 (41 league leading goals, by FAR) SHOW! This young super star is truly unfreakin believable!
