I really didn't see anything drastically different from the Giants game, the key today was we made some big plays, kept drives going, and converted 3rd downs. This play calling crap is so overrated.

WOW. I guess I'm not surprised that at least one person saw a totally different game than the rest of us.
That was night and day different.

We had the usual game plan today, pound the rock and take some deep shots.

How was today anything different than what we've been doing all along??

(BTW- no one complained about 1st half play calling vs the Giants...it was second half play calling, and there was most certainly no deep shots...nor any good "pounding of the rock".)

I would say the playcalling was a lot more creative today. We saw CP lining up behind Rabach on a few occasions and running sweeps. We saw Sellers getting the ball downfield. We saw more counters in the running game. We saw CP lining up at fullback and Sellers at halfback and then motioning Portis from the fullback position. We saw more slants, especially the one on 4th down that kept a drive alive. I don't know if I've seen any of this stuff til today. And it sure kept Det. off balance

On that first snap to CP, Rabach said that was a botched snap and never actually intended for Portis

I think we've gradually see the Redskins try different things, as Campbell has grown more comfortable. Nothing drastic, but a gradual growth. I wonder though if some of the reasoning behind today's "trick" formations and plays was to mask the absence of Moss today? Would they have been more direct in their approach with Moss in, and even ARE in the 2nd half?

But see I don't call having Portis run the ball out of shotgun "trick" plays. That is good creative playcalling. We should still run that stuff when Moss comes back. When you split the Qb out away from the formation it gives the offense an extra blocker.

Only if the QB blocks.

I understand why they won't pull Campbell out of the game, probably because they have a play off that involving him, but it'd be tough to stop if we put in an extra TE like both Yoder and Pucillo.

No one is expecting pass anyway, might as well get 10 guys to block.

Not more aggressive at all (a screen to Lloyd is not more aggressive than CP off tackle). However, I would say that I think it was more creative. The Miami game was also creative. Do we only see this with extra time available for gameplanning?
Of course, had to be creative with all the key injuries.

I didn't think playcalling was that dramatically different either, but who wants another week (or even day) of the Execution vs. Playcalling debate? Both played a role in their own small way,

But as I alluded to in another post, don't overlook the difference in the defense from last game (2nd half) to this one).

I just made a post in the "thorough asswoopin" thread about how different it was.

I understand about the debate...mine was never about execution vs playcalling. It's conservative playcalling vs aggressive play calling. We were aggressive and we kicked ass.

20 passing plays in the 3rd and 4th quarter, 20 rushes in the 3rd and 4th quarter. (keep in mind we did 5 straight rushes with 6 minutes left in the 4th trying to run out the clock on our last drive. Take that away and it's 20 passes to 15 rushes...that's HUGE! And we all know how bad it was in the second half vs the Giants. It's pretty obvious the playcalling went from conservative to aggressive.)

We didn't get the opportunity to have that many plays in the 2nd half against the Giants though. That said, we still attempted (key word-attempted) several passes

Yeah, I really agree.

I think this win goes as credit almost entirely to the players, who made allmost no mistakes.

Our D looked great, shows the importance of getting presuse on the QB when you have a pretty good secondary.

JC looked pretty good and was mistake free.

But our offense only put up 25 points, which isnt that great vs. the Lions D imo

I think JC's preformance is earning a lot more trust from everyone around him and hopefully the coaching staff will let him air it out one day, or maybe theyll be forced to.

In many ways I agree with you, Matty. We won the game with balance and ball control on offense, and great D. We absolutely CRUSHED them in TOP, and that is THE hallmark of Joe Gibbs football. But for sure, the plays that Saunders used to achieve this success were more varied. More slants, awesome use of Sellars, and better distribution in the passing game (by necessity, no doubt, but still, well done and lacking before this).

One big difference, which I give MAJOR props to Gibbs and Saunders: the red zone offense. Beautiful roll outs by Jason, letting the kid improvise and make plays, and HANDING THE BALL TO BIG MIKE! To all who were upset about the playcalling at the end of the gints game, guess what. So were Gibbs and Saunders. And they made adjustments. Very nicely done.

It goes without saying that that was one of the best defensive games, from both a planning and execution standpoint, that we've seen from Coach Williams. Pressure with a 4 man front! Hard hitting pass defense! Safeties! INTs for scores! Wow. Gameball to the D, all around.

PS Good specials, and MAN what a huge play by Cartwright. Maybe not game-saving, but close.
