Go with the highest resolution possible, you'll regret it sooner or later if you go with anything less.

I have a friend who has a 42 inch Sony LCD, and it's got a nice picture....great TV! He did pay about $2000 for it. In Sears, I noticed a smaller Sharp tv that had an excellent picture. I think it was a 32 inch LCD. I wouldn't want anything smaller than that TV. Those two brands I trust, but you know, I want to try to get as much as I can for less.

Should I be ok with getting a 720p tv, or should I just go ahead and get a 1080p?
PSSST - Look in Post #9. 42 inch 1080p Sharp for $1500

Get the biggest 1080p you can for your money. If it came down between a $1200 720p and a $2200 1080p for the same brand and size, I'd spend the extra grand for the 1080. Once HD DVDs come into the forefront, you'll thank us for it.

Nothing is taped in 1080p waste of money IMO. All the NFL they use 720 cameras. I don't think any major TV station tapes in 1080p. Only way to see 1080p right now is through a HD DVD or Blue Ray. save the money for hookers and get 720.

That's not a bad price at all! And, with it being a 42 inch 1080p altogether a better deal!

See, that's what I have found out in researching this. I don't have an HD DVD player or Blue Ray player yet (and probably won't until the format wars are over and the players are at a much lower price.) And, knowning that none of the HD stations are broadcast in 1080p yet makes me feel that 720p would be good enough for the next few years. However, as long as these LCD TVs hold up, then getting a 1080p TV now would mean less costly upgrades in the future.

There are no good hookers down here in southern virginia..hahahaha!

Supposedly you can only really tell the difference if the tv is 50" or more

It will probably be a long time before 1080p is the industry standard, most due to bandwidth issues, but there are plenty of channels broadcasting in 1080i.

480 to 720 quantium leap

720 to 1080 hopsctoch

yes 1080 is better but really not that big of a deal. I learned in the world of electronics there is always going to be something bigger, better and brighter, you just need to realize when it is worth spend the money for the bigger, better, brighter gadget.

IMO don't spend extra dollars on 1080p. Your 720p is not going to be shit in a few years. Actualy the majority of the public will own these TVs since they will be the most affordable. Do you really think big TV stations are going to replace all their 720 cameras with 1080 cameras, when the majority of people have 720 TV's. Hmmm... no they won't. CBS still doesn't have enough 720 cameras to flim every NFL game on Sundays in HD.

Yeah, but isn't 1080p better than 1080i?

That's a good way to look at it. I mean, I'm sure my friend's LCD TV he bought a couple of years ago was a 720p and when he was picking up HD channels (he doesn't have a subscription to HD TV,) it was the best picture I have ever seen. I can't image the picture being any more life like than what I saw on his TV.

Re: I need HD-TV help!!!

Good read! I have read something before about getting a tv with progressive scan is better for fast action tv as opposed to interlaced. I had just about made my mind up on that fact. Of course, I'm still trying to decide on the 1080p vs 720p argument. It is true that not every station even has quality 720p equipment...let alone 1080p equipment. I think right now, the only thing that is in 1080p are HD-DVDs or Blu ray discs.

One thing that was mentioned was buying a TV with a better scaler. I assume this has to do with how well a regular broadcast picture looks on an HD-TV. Some of the channels on my friend's TV looks like crap.

Re: I need HD-TV help!!!

Best thing I can tell you is that I have three HD TV's. 50" Samsung DLP rear projection, 42" Phillips Plasma with amiblight (waste of money but wife likes it), 32" Phillips LCD Flat Panel. I love all three and all are 720p.

Basically buy a TV you can afford and is made buy someone good (SONY, Phillips, Samsung, etc...no Visio). Also remeber once you bring that bad boy home there are no other TV's to compare it too. Don't drive yourself crazy, no matter what you get you will love it.
