I don't know if this was how Gruden figured it, and this is definitely a hindsight view, but IF we kicked it and they started at the 25, and our D doesn't stop them, they could have run the clock down to near zero with a long 9 min drive (that is what they did to the Ravens). So maybe you say to the D - "I'm gonna give the Offense a shot to win, but if not, you all need to step up". They didn't, but it only took 3 minutes instead of 9, and we still had a shot to score and onside kick again.
