Re: Kirk Cousins 24/7 thread

Statistics aren't irrelevant, but you have to interpret them correctly. The fact that Cousins is 11th in passing yards and 13th in rating and whatever whatever, that's a function of both the quality of his play AND the quality of the offense around him, AND the situations the team has found itself in. So QBs can play to their ability, but they don't all face the same situations, they don't all have the same lines and same weapons, and they haven't all faced the same defenses.

So you can't just go off numbers and draw a conclusion based solely on that.

The question you have to answer is: if we had a different QB playing behind this line, with these weapons, and in the situations we've faced, how would that QB have done? Not easy to answer. But I think half the QBs in the NFL would have put up as good or better numbers than Cousins, and half would have been worse.

Our line is absolutely awesome at protecting, and between Reed Jackson Crowder and Garcon, some of the best weapons in the game. Last year Cousins was 6th in QBR, but I do not think he is the 6th best QB in the league. I think there's probably 10-15 guys who could have matched his numbers.

BUT THAT'S NOT THE POINT! The point is football is a dependent game, and QBs aren't the only thing that matters. If Cousins can put up the 6th best QBR in the league partly because he's solid but also because he's benefitting from a good line and great weapons, then you've got a winning offensive formula. You don't F with it. You try to pay him fairly - not as the 6th best QB in the league, but as a good starter you can win with.

Cousins and the offense are not what's preventing us from being a very good team (well, he wasn't helping in the first two games this year). But now he looks much better. Our problem is defense. If McCloughan keeps Cousins and this offense together, and manages to put together a defense, THEN we've got something.

You don't need a top 5 QB in order to put up a top 5 offensive performance. Keep that in mind.
