I think its going to be very critical what they change to.

Not that this would happen, but if they wen't from the Redskins to say the Kings or something and completely changed everything, I could see some people who don't live in the DMV area switching allegiances to maybe their local team or taking a step back from football all together. Not saying its right/wrong but I think that's very realistic.
As an out of town fan myself if they changed the name, logo, and colors, I'd be inclined to say what am I even rooting for anymore? It's not the team I grew up with.

If they made a change to the name and kept the same colors and maybe used a throwback uni or something that at least kept with the history of the team, I think I'd be alright with it.

How isnt it the team you grew up with? If they changed name, logo, and colors for next year how isnt it the same team you are rooting for this year?

Players come and go, the logo and colors are the true identity of the franchise.

Seinfeld was right, people really do root for clothes.

There are many things that draw people to a team in the first place, other than it being in their own back yard. Fact is a lot of people would be in the same boat as myself.

Riggins, Monk, Theismann, Green etc. don't play anymore. In time RG3 will be gone.

So what keeps you a fan, just being a local? What if they moved to another city and another team started up in DC? Who are you rooting for?

That's a good question, what does team mean? I think local has a lot to do with it but I also think who you grow up rooting for is also a big part of it.

If the Skins moved away and a new team moved in I'd start following the new team but I'd still pay attention to what the old Skins are doing.

I'm a Skins fan because they're local and because they've always been a family team. At this point if they moved somewhere else I would still be a fan just because I've been a hardcore Redskins fan for the past 8 years. But for me its all about being local, hence why I'm an O's, Nats, Caps and Wizards fan. So a little part of me in terms of fandom would be gone for good.

There are some teams I like just because of the fan base and history though, such as the Raiders in football and the Red Sox in baseball.

But I'll always root for the home team first.

I moved from Rockville, Maryland to the West Coast 30 years ago, what keeps me a fan? The tradition, history, uniform, the team is like my family, identity. You take that away, you might as well root for no one.

I agree 100% with Matty (especially since I now live in the area).

I think its very critical, if the name changes, how they go about doing it. I think it really needs to pay homage to the past (Hogs/Skins/Braves) and keep the same burgundy and gold theme...

I really think the name/identity means a lot more to people than you're really taking into consideration.

I'm sure there are a ton of fans who agree 100% with what you're saying too... maybe even a vast majority... but I think its very critical how they approach a change.

Absolutely, how this change is made is extremely critical. I dont have a problem with changing everything and making a fresh start but it has to be done the right way.

Yeah and I'd be pretty willing to bet if there are changes, they're not going to be extreme like he's suggesting.

Wiping the slate completely clean on a multi-million dollar business? Not smart.
