Whereas in criminal court the prosecution must prove guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, in civil trials you usually only have to prove your case by a preponderance of the evidence (i.e., the evidence weighs in your favor). So, a rape victim might very reasonably conclude that she does not want to go through an emotional trial if the prosecution is likely to lose, but she can hit him where it hurts (i.e., the wallet).

Again, I don't know her or her motivations. I just don't think people should automatically assume that a woman who claims to have been raped and sues is some greedy whore. Is that unreasonable?
