Because a pro team promised cash/ name recognition/came to a legal settlement quietly. Also the trademark would be Washington RedWolves. The Giants in SF can't stop the New York Giants.

I am not saying it wouldn't be a hurdle, but definitely not insurmountable if you have the legal and financial resources and the resolve to pursue it.
