Re: Questions that might effect the DRAFT
This is a deep draft for Cs (of course a couple of the college centers aren't expected to be Centers in the NFL-Unger is probably an OT, and he's getting killed in Mobile this week; and Luigs is looking pretty weak as well apparently)
I really like Connor Barwin as LB/DE/TE (that's right I said TE hybrid) but he's not worth the #13 overall pick
I hear the defenses are killing them at the Senior Bowl? I also heard that Unger and Mack were getting burnt up? Any truth to that? Sorry for pissing on your Inaguration thread. |
Re: Questions that might effect the DRAFT
That might be starting to change somewhat, since two Centers entered the Sr. Bowl with first round grades.
A player like Mack is the perfect example of a guy that the scouts usually will not miss on. If three different Redskins scouts work him out, and they come to a consensus answer that he's the best college center they've ever seen, then you can bet your life he's going to be a good value pick at 13 overall. Then again, there's always the one guy who tries to find a flaw in everyones game, as to protect himself in case he busts. If I'm running a team, I don't want those guys within breathing distance of by evaluation process. Of course, there's no telling how many of those guys the Redskins already have on staff.
With first round centers the two guys that come to mind for me are Jeff Faine and Nick Mangold. Faine became productive eventually but on draft day he was considered one of the few sure things only to be replaced by LeCharles Bently. I haven't really kept track of Mangold, though on draft day I predicted that in three years the Jets would have one of the five best O-Lines in the league. Judging from their performance this year with Thomas Jones going to the pro bowl it looks like they're doing pretty good for themselves, though eventually they did have to patch things up with Faneca and Woody. Spencer was another first round center from recent memory but from what I can recall he was drafted as a Center/Guard combo. The funny thing is Kalil might be better then all of them, and if you don't believe just look at how DeAngelo Williams (my Facebook friend lol) broke out this past season after Carolina basically overhauled the entire line, among which Kalil was made a starter. Anyway as a rule of thumb I feel that with pro bowlers usually the deepest you can go is the first round with tackles though you have exceptions like Jansen and McNeil. Then with Guards I think you can usually get a quality prospect in the second round. And as I said before I feel like many good centers usually fall to the third round though it seems these days that the best are being picked up in the late second (case in point Kalil and Pollack). Still a few good prospects in Wallace and Lichtensteiger lasted until the fourth round last year. |
lol, u said TE hybrid...u know OT Jason Smith used to be a TE....we can run a 3 TE set on the goal line with 310 lbs. Smith as an eligible receiver! lol.
Connor Barwin is beast! |

Yeah well, I should have known the inauguration thread would steer off course. But anyway, yeah Mack is more or less holding his ground but Unger is looking awful. Peria Jerry looking really good too (I know he's not an OL, just mentioning it) |
Re: Questions that might effect the DRAFT
But the #13 pick depends on a few things.
1. Who do they plan on releasing before the june 1st deadline? 2. Who do they plan on resigning? 3. Anyone retiring? 4. Do we grab anyone in FA? 5. Can we trade down on draft day? 6. Who is available on the board at #13 if we stay there. If by the end of this season not 1 of these 4 draft picks look like they are the real deal, and Kelly/Thomas/Davis are all quiet this year, I'd fire the whole scouting and player personnel staff (minus Cerrato cause he ain't goin' nowhere) |
Re: Questions that might effect the DRAFT
Mel Kiper has Michael Oher (OT), Brian Cushing (LB), and Alex Mack (C) all falling as late first round picks. I wonder if this continues to be predicted in different mock drafts, should we trade down?

i'd love to trade down, but I don't think we're in a good position....don't think anyone wants to trade up to 13...but i could be wrong |
Re: Questions that might effect the DRAFT
Ball States Nate Davis is from my home town & I have known him since he was a young kid. When he was a freshmen in high school I watched him throwing 70 yard passes to his teammates in practice. Where do you guys see him going in the draft?

In principal I would love to trade down as well. I mean I can't tell you how excited I was last year when we got two second round picks from the Falcons (while my friend who was a Falcons fan, ironically was disapointed). However after the way things turned out I've found myself gun shy to the idea as I feel Vinny does a much better job finding the right guys with higher draft picks then when he tries and goes for quantity. Then again last year was the only year in recent memory where I could argue Vinny's experience with quantitiy. |

Late first round to anywhere in the second. Worst case, third round.

lol. touche my friend. But also remember last year when we saw the 3 draft picks Thomas, Kelly, Davis, don't tell me u wasn't wiping up ur nut cause i had to go change my draws!....Thomas and Kelly became best friends n didn't do shit during the summer n thought they could go into training camp n be king (like in college), and Davis isn't gettin' much PT behind Cooley, plus isn't he struggling in blocking? I think Kelly gets it and will make an impact next year, Thomas knows he has to put in some work, but i think he's gonna be a bust. Davis will figure things out and we'll see more 2 tight sets, or Davis on the line and Cooley in the slot (that's just sick) |
