Antonio Pierce

Just finished reading the WT article on Pierce being a "reluctant" NY Giant. I have to wonder why in this day and age it is acceptable for players and agents to ask for the moon in contract negotiations but when teams do the same thing, by low-balling, they get villified by the players. Pierce called the first contract offer an "embarassment". Shouldn't the last contract offer be the one you base your opinion on? Not the last. I thought it was somewhat reasonable that the Skins didn't want to blow right past Washington's deal yet the article mentions that Pierce didn't want to go. That is not true. He didn't want to go just as long as the Skins offered him the most money. That is not nearly the same thing. What a crock. I like Pierce and he is actually one of the good guys but that is what's scary. When a guy like Pierce, who left for money basically, is one of the good guys what the hell is wrong with the rest of the guys?

Re: Antonio Pierce

I loved Pierce, it's a shame something couldn't have been worked out. He obviously really wanted to be here, but at what cost?

He says in the past free agents have basically robbed the Skins, I'll give him that but the key is the past.

I'm sure we'd all take AP over Marshall straight up, but when you compare the jobs they are doing on the field and what they're making, Marshall is a steal.

AP said it himself, this D will be successful no matter who's at MLB, so why should the Skins have broken the bank on him?

He answered his own question.

Re: Antonio Pierce

Well maybe if we're WINNING this year, we can have free agents like the Patriots who WANT to stay for cheap.

AP is a stud for GW. Maybe he can come back. Was sorry to see him go in a way I wasn't for Smoot.

Re: Antonio Pierce

I liked Antonio Pierce, mainly because he was a homegrown Redskin who made plays as a special teamer, got his chance to start and performed well at middle linebacker. I don't blame him for taking the money, but I also think the Giants overpaid for him.

Lemar Marshell is an adequete replacement. He's not quite the ball hawk that Pierce was, but he's consistent and runs Williams defense pretty well.

Re: Antonio Pierce

Pierce was a great leader on the field last year for us. There is not that much loyalty in the game anymore when it comes to players and their contracts. They take the money and run. Hopefully Gibbs can create the same atmosphere that the Pats have in recent years. It is refreshing to hear a player take less money to stay with a team for the right reasons, than leave for all the wrong reasons. Smoot left for money too. I bet he wishes he was still in washington with the way the Vikings are playing. I believe the Redskins had plans in place that would allow for those two players to leave. They knew how much they could offer that would not hamper the future in terms of cap reasons. Especially when you have LaVar on the bench, and Marshall playing as well as he did last year. I think they will have a plan next year too, with McCume. He is on our practice squad right now, but this guy once he gets to know the system will be a pretty good LB. He is like 26 years old, and was in the Marines or something like that. He is a big guy, like LaVar and is faster than LaVar. Watch out for this guy this year, maybe even late in the year if we have an injury.

Faster than Lavar? You sure?

Thats what I heard from early in preseason. Plus the guy is HUGE! not as tall as LaVar, but just as big. Nothing but muscle.

Re: Antonio Pierce

No way Pierce is faster than Lavar. And as far as size, Lavar is 6'3 247 and Pierce is 6'1 240.

We aren't talking about Pierce, look at my post. We are talking about Robert McCume, a LB that was drafted late and is on the practice squad.
Also, he was special teams player of the year for his conference, I think he played at Louisville, I may be wrong about where he played, but he did get the award.

My bad 56 fanatic. I just saw that the thread was about Pierce and automatically thought you were talking about him.

You're right about McCune.

Re: Antonio Pierce

FRPGL, here is an article from Redskins.com The Redskins added Louisville linebacker Robert McCune to the mix in the fifth round of the NFL Draft Sunday. Because Antonio Pierce departed in free agency and Mike Barrow battled through an injury-plagued 2004 season, McCune was an attractive option.

"Obviously, a spot on our football team where somebody can make our team is middle linebacker," head coach Joe Gibbs said. "I really trust [linebackers coach] Dale Lindsey's judgment on linebackers. He had Robert much higher in the draft, and we thought he was going to go much higher. So I feel good about that."

Robert McCune McCune was a first team All-Conference USA selection as a senior last season and led the Cardinals with 115 tackles. He was also named Louisville's special teams player of the year in 2001.

McCune lettered in football only twice at LeFlore High School in Mobile, Ala. Following his high school graduation, he joined the Army National Guard and spent six months in Korea and six months in Kuwait.

When he completed his service, he returned to the states in 2000 and walked on to Louisville's football team at the age of 21.

"I think a lot of people probably backed off of him because of age, starting his career at 26," Gibbs said. "For us, it was someone that we felt like was really a value."

In an exclusive interview with Redskins.com, McCune said he is still learning the finer points of the game, but is excited to play with Pro Bowlers LaVar Arrington and Marcus Washington.

"Watching those guys play, I'm going to learn from them, take advice from them, and try to play great football with them," McCune said.

Gibbs updated Barrow's status, saying that he is scheduled to have an MRI on May 6 due to lingering knee tendonitis. If all goes well in his recovery, it would be a significant step toward his return to the field.

"Then it will be a process of him going through running and exercising and working out for the trainers," Gibbs said. "They have to go through a whole process there before he's cleared to play football.

Gibbs said that Lemar Marshall is another player who is adjusting to the middle linebacker position this season. Marshall filled in admirably for Arrington at outside linebacker last season, starting 14 games.

"I think Lamar is feeling more confident," Gibbs said. "I think he's kind of assuming a commanding role out there. He started out filling in and ended up being one of our key guys last year. We think he gives us flexibility because he can play outside or inside."

Ummm yeah I know who the guy is and all. I am questioning the statement that he is faster than Lavar. Not really questioning it but more wondering why he isn't on the actvie roster if he is as big and fast as Lavar.
