Times Disp - John Markon

LANDOVER, Md. It's difficult to think of a single reason why third down and long should be anything other than a death sentence for the Washington Redskins. It's been at least five years since the adjectives "young," "strong-armed" and "mobile" were a good fit with quarterback Mark Brunell. The only real deep threat among Brunell's receivers is Santana Moss, who's one of those little guys who often seem to disappear in zone coverage. The Redskins just don't have most of the things that would seem necessary to move the chains on third and 10 (or more). Which doesn't begin to explain yesterday's 20-17 overtime victory over Seattle at FedEx Field, which boosted the home team to 3-0 for the first time since 1991. "Those long-yardage situations . . . third and 7, third and 10, the idea is still to stay out of those," Brunell said. "You're always cognizant that it is third and long, and your odds of converting it are slim. At least half the time, you're going to get stuffed." |
