Around the NFL: AFC South

2004 AFC South Standings:

Colts 12-4: The Colts have this guy named Manning, and he's pretty damn good I heard.

Jaguars 9-7: The Jags took a step forward in 2004, but not the huge leap some were expecting.

Texans 7-9: The Texans were one of those trendy preseason picks that didn't pan out.

Titans 5-11: My how far the mighty have fallen. With a team gutted by the salary cap, they look like a team in rebuilding mode.

My predictions for 2005:

Colts 13-3: There's just no stopping the Colts in this division. They're an easy lock for a 12 or 13 win season.

Jaguars 10-6: I think the Jags will take another step forward and challenge for the wild card. But they really need Leftwich to step up his game and become that franchise QB they envisioned him being when they drafted him 7th overall in 2003.

Texans 8-8: Similar to the Jags, the Texans need Carr to step up his game and start playing like a true franchise QB. He's shown gradual improvement over the course of his career thus far, but it's time for him to take the team on his shoulders.

Titans 7-9: Last year was a disaster for the Titans, but I think they can show a modest rebound in 2005. They still have some talent, but they are definitely a team in transition and they lost some key guys this offseason.

Re: Around the NFL: AFC South

Colts 13-3: My Super Bowl pick from the AFC. Manning finally gets the New England monkey off his back. Some young defenders, especially in the secondary, start to pitch in and do their part for the Colts. I expect them to secure home field advantage through the playoffs, since New England has lost some key parts. If the Colts don't get homefield advantage, I don't think there's any way they can beat the Patriots in Foxboro in January or the Steelers in Pitt. They're an indoor team, but this year I think they'll be in their dome come playoffs.

Jaguars 8-8: Running game is really iffy. Fred Taylor is coming of MAJOR knee surgery, and I don't like Fragile Freddy's chances of going the whole year. LaBrandon Toefield, his backup, does not impress me. I like Leftwich, but I don't think there will be support from the running game all year. Great DTs in Stroud and Henderson.

Texans 7-9: I'm not buying David Carr. And the defense is nothing to write home about.

Titans 7-9: Like Matty I see improvement. And I'm never going to crap on a team with a healthy Steve McNair. The guy is all guts. They've got two quality running backs now in Henry and Chris Brown. Lost a lot in the offseason, like Samari Rolle and Derrick Mason. The drafting of Pac Man might work out in the long haul, but right now he has an uphill battle with his legal troubles. They have lots of holes, but a great coach and a great QB.

Re: Around the NFL: AFC South

Colts 12-4: Clearly the class of this division. The Defense should continue to be adequate, and maybe even better than adequate.....but let's face it, this team is all about offense. No reason to believe Manning, Harrison, Wayne and James won't have another great year together. Dallas Clark could really breakout without Pollard around. Freeney will show the league again that he is THE man at DE. Agreed with Schneed.....homefield is a real possibility (and VERY important) for the Colt's possible run to Detroit.

Jags 8-8: Put me down as a disbeliever. I'm just not THAT impressed with the Jags. Leftwich hasn't convinced me. Taylor is just a juke move away from a career ender. Reggie Williams really needs to step up his game if they are to have a legit passing attack (although I still like Jimmy Smith). The 8 wins come from a very solid Defense.....the 8 losses from playing in the AFC.

Texans 8-8: They are the team you always think will break out, but never does. I actually think Carr will have a good year and be improved, but that offensive line has never been adequate. Dominick Davis should continue to be a stud, but he's always an injury concern. I love Andre Johnson, but am not at all sold by Jabar Gaffney or Corey Bradford as a #2. Defense is nothing to write home about.......and they've lost their #1 tackler (I think). They get into some shootouts and win a few games because of Davis and Johnson....but they just aren't an AFC playoff caliber team.

Titans 4-12: A decent shot at finishing dead last in the league. If McNair is healthy, this team isn't that bad........I just can't see McNair staying healthy on a consistent basis anymore (years of really tough punishment have caught up, I believe). The RB situation is going to cause some controversey.......but they have to be happy having either Brown or Henry as a backup. Calico was impressive......but I think Bennett played too well to be able to produce like that again. Overall, this team has just been too decimated from salary cap to recover yet. They have some talent at the skill positions, but I think they lose the battle in the trenches on both sides of the ball every single week. Albert Haynesworth is the only lineman worth mentioning on this team.

Re: Around the NFL: AFC South

If the Colts can get the home field advantage, they will play in a dome for every playoff game including the Superbowl in Detroit. I like their chances. Manning has stats to be in the HOF, he needs a Superbowl appearence and win to make it a lock.

Re: Around the NFL: AFC South

Colts: 14-2: There are no obvious weaknesses on this team. Of course, if Peyton goes down forget about it, 2-14.

Jags: 9-7: It's time for Leftwich to step up because there a lot of people who think David Garrard might even be a better choice. I'm not one of them but I do think Garrard deserves a chance to start somewhere. Jags boast, in my opinion, two of the game's more underrated players-Jimmy Smith and Fred Taylor

Texans: 6-10: Not quite there yet. They have some future perennial all-stars in Dunta Robinson and Andre Johnson. Domanick Davis gets the job done, he'll take pressure off of David Carr. But as someone said earlier, who's the no. 2 receiver there? When we cut Darnerien, the Texans should go after him

Titans: 3-13: Too many questions on this team. Will Steve McNair stay healthy? Will Tyrone Calico step up as a no. 1 receiver? How will they split time between Travis Henry and Chris Brown? Will Brown even stay healthy? Who replaces Samari Rolle? And so on

Re: Around the NFL: AFC South

Colts: 12-4 - The O is what wins games for this team, and Dungy has the D coming into there own...

Jags: 10-6 - There D is really tough, and the young recievers need to step up this year...

Texans: 8-8 - The D is not all that bad, but until another WR steps up there O will strugle...

Titans: 6-10 - Drew Bennett is probably praying that McNair goes down and Volek comes in so that he will have a productive season... As for the D I think they are a work in progress
