Coaches under Pressure

July 8 issue of Sporting News...

"New offensive assistant/quarterbacks coach Bill Musgrave already has incorporated the shotgun formation into the Redskins' offense, but unless Musgrave finds the key to making Patrick Ramsey a better, more confident quarterback, the offense will struggle as it did last season. Musgrave has worked on Ramsey's footwork and needs to get him to deliver the ball quickly and learn the difference between a calculated risk and a bad gamble. If Musgrave can accomplish that, the team will have a chance to have an adequate offense..."

I don't think so who would replace him next season? Not Campbell.

What do you mean not Campbell? He was a first round draft choice and at that point would have a year under his belt learning the system. He would clearly be the front runner to step in for teh job, and even if Ramsey has a career year this year he still might have the best chance to start next year.

Living in fantasy land!

Being drafted in the 1st round doesn't make you first round talent, nor does it make you an NFL starter, Barring a rash of injuries at the QB position this kid wont see the field until his 3rd season, and my opinion on that is he will see it with another team via trade once Ramsey locks down the job, which he will.

You cannot give up what we gave up for a QB and then make him a long term backup, you either have to play him or showcase him for a trade down the road, this kid will not out perform Ramsey!

It's funny how so many want to cut Campbell slack for being a mediocre QB his first 3 years and blame it on the fact that he had to learn 3 different offenses, but when the same scenerio happens to Ramsey on the NFL level, not an inferior collegiate level he then is labeled as someone who can't get the job done, the problem with Ramsey has been organizational and lack of direction and continuity not Ramsey himself, when everyone else get's their act together Ramsey will blossom, and Campbell will sit, and sit, and sit!

i don't know if campbell would be the guy or if joe would use brunell again or if the skins would go after another free agent qb but it's pretty obvious that gibbs does'nt have full confidence in ramsey. ramsey was named the starter out of default, gibbs had to remove brunnel last season and ramsey did give the skins a little spark. gibbs had to give the starting job to ramsey for the upcoming season, he could'nt go back to brunnel that soon nor could he name a rookie qb the starter,
don't get me wrong, i really like ramsey and hope he does well but i gotta believe if he does not then joe will not give him another shot.

Gibbs talent evaluation up to this point has been very suspect, he ran right out and traded for Portis, having no clue what kind of runner he really is, and now has to redisign the entire offensive blocking schemes to accomadate his running style, and go away from what he did to get to 4 SB's winning 3, he then recently admits he didn't realize that Betts is as good as he is, and is much more than just a 3rd down back, and in doing so sounding a lot like the kind of back he really likes.

He then sticks with Gardner all year instead of McCants, say what you want about how the kid practices, but bottom line there's not a guy on this board who would rather have Gardner in the game rather than McCants, and many of us said that from day 1.

So to say because Gibbs drafted Campbell because of his lack of confidence in Ramsey means absolutly nothing to me, because I see the same scenerio unfolding between the QB's, perhap's it's Gibbs lack of confidence in himself after his layoff that is fueling some of these decisions, Perhaps some of his decisions early on were based on what he was told by others in the organization, who know's? But to have confidence in Gibbs ability to judge talent at this point is scary, remember he's the one who gave away a ton for Brunell when a lot of us were screaming don't do it, and he couldn't get away from the guy for over half a season, retarding Ramseys groth as a QB, and the team's growth as a whole.

Re: Coaches under Pressure

OFFISS, your assesment of gibbs ability to bring in and/or use the right guys is definately fair, i can't really dispute anything you just said. i guess only time will tell.

Well I think we both agree that we really want him to get it right and hopefully with a year under his belt to refresh his memory that will start to happen. :headbange

Re: Coaches under Pressure

i think that ramsey will do a good job this year he played well in the games he started last season (he could hardly have of played worse than brunell) and i think that our O will be much improved this year considering we have changed the blocking schemes to accomodate portis better which will make him even more of a threat than he was last year when even though the blocking schemes weren't right he still managed over 1,300 yards. We have also added moss and patten who are speedy recievers who can get down the field which is another thing we didnt't do last year. Overall i see a definite return to the playoffs for the skins
