Someone Help!
Well,I knew it would happen sooner or later livivg in texas,my new neighbor is a flaming Cowgirl fan.Got into an argument with him today concerning the season we won the Super Bowl against Denver. He said Williams led the team to the super bowl.I said it depends on what your definition of led is.if i remember correctly Ryp was the starter and went down around game 6 or 7.Jay Shray started up to and including the N.F.C. championship.Seems like he left late in that game . Was he injured? Was game in hand? Why did Williams start in Super Bowl?Any answers will be appreciated

Re: Someone Help!
To help you out a little, Mark Rypien, I am pretty sure wasnt on the team yet, or at least not according to this web site. Maybe he didnt have any stats that year, but any how our passing leaders for the team in 1987 were Doug Williams, Jay Schroeder, Ed Rubbert, and Tony Robinson.
http://www.jt-sw.com/football/pro/st...nnual/1987-was If my memory is correct Jay Schroeder started that season, he was injured, I believe and thus Gibbs went with Williams. As far as leading the team to the super bowil like you said depends on how you look at it. Williams was a vet on the team that got the job done for us, but I think that Schroeder played most of that season...

Re: Someone Help!
Here is a pretty good account of what happend in 1987...
http://www.nationmaster.com/encyclopedia/Doug-Williams-(football-player) "Initially Williams served as the backup for starting quarterback Jay Schroeder, but after Schroeder became injured, Williams ended up starting many of the games during the 1987 regular season. When the Skins made the playoffs, Williams was chosen to be the starter. He led the team to Super Bowl XXII, becoming the first black quarterback to play in the Super Bowl. Facing Broncos quarterback John Elway, Williams helped engineer a 42-10 rout, in which the Redskins set an NFL record by scoring 5 touchdowns in the second quarter. Williams completed 18 of 29 passes for 340 yards, with 4 TD passes, and was named Super Bowl MVP." It is mostly about Doug Williams but it accounts for who did what...

Re: Someone Help!
Schroeder wasen't having a great season to begin with and when Williams came in he moved the ball a little better than Jay did, Schroeder healed up and I believe got back in but lost his job again to Williams which infurated him, he was healthy for the playoffs Gibbs just felt Williams was the man for the job, Schroeder did get back in for 1 play during the SB when Williams hyperextended his knee, Schroeder was then traded to Oakland in the offseason.

Re: Someone Help!
Rypien was the 3rd stringer. He was drafted by the Skins in the 6th round in 1986

Re: Someone Help!
Jay Schroeder up & down as the starter for most of the season. During the strike Ed Rubbert led us to victory against St. Louis & New York before he got hurt. Tony Robinson Stepped in against Dallas and got the win. After the Strike Schroeder picked up where he left off, with on again off again performances. In the last game of the regular season Doug Williams came in for Schroeder and brought us from behind to beat the Vikings in Minnesota. Gibbs made the decision to go with Williams in the playoffs, where he beat the Bears in Chicago and the The Vikings at RFK. Then it was an MVP performance to beat the Broncos 42-10.
I hope that clears it up for you and the Cowturd fan. By the way Mark Rypien was inactive for most if not all of the '87 season. |

Re: Someone Help!
If I recall correctly, Schroeder put up some decent numbers but never had quite the same camraderie with his teammates that DW had. They seemed to rally more around Doug Williams

Re: Someone Help!
I played center in high school, it definitely takes a while to get used to having someone's hands in that area, in fact I don't think you ever get used to it, you just black it out, LOL
