Re: GM issues

I don't necessarily think he's doing a bad job. He made some tough decisions that for the first time, had the future in mind. You got to give him a year or two to get his players in the then re-evaluate.
Evry off-season when the skins go on a spending spree, everybody bashes us. When we don't go out and do the same thing this year, everybody bashes us.

Re: GM issues

The front office is in a lose-lose situation right now, damned if they do and damned if they don't.

If they outbid everyone for Smoot and Pierce we'd probably hear about how they are screwed regarding the cap and the team is selling its future to win now.

Re: GM issues

Just curious. What other teams in the league have the coach as de facto GM?

As for the skins, I think people would be holding their tongues about the FO except for the Coles situation. Not overbidding for players is a step in the right direction I think, but the Coles thing was such a circus that they can't look good. And it wasn't good. They lost a guy they paid a ton of money to and traded away a #1 pick for--however it happened, it's an FO mistake. And once again the media is filled with stories of Danny boy ranting and raving and meddling. I wonder how Gibbs felt when he read about Danny and the flat screen TV? I hope Gibbs has a fatherly chat with our favorite young billionaire and says, "Son, if you do that again, I'll walk. Oh, and please detach that monkey-boy from your ass. It's embarrasing."

Re: GM issues

I'm not sure if there was an "ideal" way to handle the Coles situation. Could it have been dealt with better? Yeah probably.

I'm glad it's over and both sides have moved on. Hopefully we as fans can move on as well. It's water under the bridge at this point.

Re: GM issues

It's no secrect that Gibbs has had his hands full since day one. Isn't the fact that he has so many assistants proof of that?

Re: GM issues

Gibb's did a nice job in last year's draft as far as evaluation of talent on the college level, I can even live with giving up a second rd. pick for Portis even though I was against it, the Brunell situation is the 1 thing that is killing him right now, I am also watching how he's handled thing's this year, and it seem's to me he's learned a lesson from that deal as well, he's starting to realize that if your going to shell out big buck's for a player you better make sure you can't replace him reasonably for a much lower salary, I defiently believe that is what happened with Smoot, we all know he wanted Pierce but I still believe that they feel they can replace him at a minimum cost, if your going to pay out the big buck's to certain player's than you better find bargain's at other position's.

Re: GM issues

I don't like coach/gm combos. Parcells, Holmgren, etc. I just don't think head coaches have the time to dedicate to scouting that a GM does.

I feel he's made some mistakes, but also made great moves:
(Brunell, Smoot, Coles situation)
(Portis, Washington, Griffen, Springs, last years draft)

Re: GM issues

Thats why our cousin Vinney is the head of scouting. But I still think we need a GM. Maybe we could hire the guy who is head of scouting at Miami University. They seem to be NFL U, why not bring him onboard and see what happens. It cant hurt anything.

I also think having that huge coaching staff is an awesome idea. As long as all of them are on the same page more power to us.

I like Wilbon and I like his point of view on almost everything he has ever written. He doenst wear the Burgandy colored glasses like we do, and he doesnt hate like that BITCH Sally Jerkoff.

Once again I think Wilbon is right, our hands were tied with Coles, and maybe we should have just gaged him and tied him up in the basement, but we had to rid ourselves of that problem. Were paying now, to rid ourselves of future (toe) problems.

Re: GM issues

I don't care for coach/GM combos either. Danny Boy should allow Gibbs to bring in his own GM.

Re: GM issues

When Gibbs was on his first stint with the team he had a GM and all he had to do was concentrate on coaching the players Bethard aquired. Plus there was no free agency and that's the killer today. I think through loosing Pierce and Smoot he's learning just how difficult it is to keep a team together in this new age of football.
Further, during his initial stint the Redskins could get just about any player they wanted and Mr. Cooke would pay them. The problem today is not only getting them, but keeping them.
