Man charged in Sean Taylor's murder writes apology to newspaper

The strange case of the men charged in the 2007 slaying of Washington Redskins free safety Sean Taylor took another strange twist Wednesday when one of the accused offered an apology in his first public comments.

Venjah Hunte, 25, responded to inquiries from The Washington Times with a two-and-a-half page hand-written letter.



The Times quotes Hunte as writing, "To begin I would like to send my deepest apology to the family of Sean Taylor. I know an apology won't bring him back, but I hope one day they could find it in their hearts to forgive me."

Hunte resides in Miami's Metro West Detention Center, according to the newspaper.

Taylor was killed on Nov. 27, 2007, in what is believed to be a robbery gone wrong. He was 24 when he died of gunshot wounds a day earlier. Taylor was home recovering from football injuries when intruders entered his residence.

Hunte is serving a 29-year sentence under a plea bargain he tried to back out of in 2008. Four other men are awaiting trial, which is scheduled for April 15 after numerous delays.

"My thought or intentions weren't to hurt him or noone [sic] else, let alone murder, it was something I thought would never happen," Hunte wrote in the letter to The Times. "Even though I didn't pull the trigger I still have to take responsibility for my actions. Period."

Hunte told the newspaper he lives in solitary confinement 23 hours a day because of the case's high profile.

Taylor was from Miami and played college football for the University of Miami.

I don't think that he was trying to make everything "ok" with his apology. His words show that. It seems that he is expressing true remorse and repentance, which is something we can all appreciate. His attitude is much nobler than being unrepentant.

While I deeply abhor what he did and I think that no apology can make it "ok," we should respect the fact that he is publicly remorseful.

Have Taylor's peoples forgiven him? Because it seems to me that the only way anyone else should try and respect or appreciate the remorse from this dude is if they do so and implore others to do the same.

Otherwise, screw this guy and his regret. Human nature works both ways.

Words are just that......perhaps he is genuinely remorseful, perhaps he is greasing the skids for an early parole. Who can tell? I imagine there are many talented....Sales people in the prison system......

Ok, fair enough. None of us are in a position to judge his sincerity as either good or ill. Perhaps the fact that he was asked for a short statement and responded with a long letter is a testament to his sincerity but neither you nor I can know for sure.

Nonetheless, his response still beats a remorseless and unrepentant one.

He can apologize all he wants; he killed someone and that someone was a hell of a football and a father. Us fans can never have him back, his kid will never get to know him. He made the decision to commit a stupid crime of robbing him and shooting him. I see it as a life for a life. He still deserves the death penalty (if theres no death penalty in the state, then life in prison)

Hunte did not pull the trigger so he did not actually kill ST. He wasn't even inside the home. He probably didn't go out that night thinking that someone was going to be murdered. But that's the problem with these wanna be gang bangers, they don't think about the ramifications if someone is hurt or killed when a bunch of them go out together and do a crime. He'll get out eventually, when he's around 50 years old or so.

As far as Venja Hunte is concerned. His response seemed pretty contrite. Most guilty criminals do not accept responsibility for their own actions.

I agree with KLHJ2 and Lotus on this one. I do not know whether he is honestly contrite or not, but it's not for me to judge. If the people that knew ST are willing to forgive him so am I. All I lost is what ST brought to the field, they lost a son, father, friend, brother, etc. For me, this is a step in the right direction. It's good to see him accept responsibility for his actions even though he wasn't in the home and didn't pull the trigger. Now if the other 4 will do the same...
