Ken Lucas to Carolina - $13 Million Bonus
From ESPN.com's Thursday Roundup:
Lucas, a three-year starter in Seattle, signed a six-year contract. Lucas signed a six-year contract worth $36 million, with a signing bonus in the $13 million to $14 million range. With a contract that high, does that mean we should pony up the $13.5 million that Smoot is asking for? Seems like if we don't pay him we'll miss the boat on free agent CBs and be forced to go with Walt Harris or draft somebody. Ken Lucas is gone, Anthony Henry is in Dallas now... seems like we're staring at a big payout to either Smoot or Rolle, or we stick with what we've got. What would you do? |

If Lucas' price was that high Smoot isn't going to budge. We either give him is asking price or look elsewhere because he isn't going down after this big contract and leaving him as one of the three or so (Law, Rolle, and Smoot maybe Baxter) good corners left.

Smooty for a $12M SB. Let's get it done already!

There's no way he is taking less than Lucas in a SB.

The market is established, I'm not even sure we could get Smoot for a $12M bonus now.
I still think Rolle is who the Skins are targeting though. |

Re: Ken Lucas to Carolina - $13 Million Bonus
I'd prefer to keep Smoot versus getting Rolle. Smoot is younger. Smoot is better than Ken Lucas and Anthony Henry and so he deserves more than they got. Smoot loves the Redskins and is a locker room leader. And by keeping Smoot, we'd be telling our guys that we place a premium on players who perform and want to be here. I've had enough of going outside the organization for players when we've got them here already.

I'm with Ramseyfan here - retain Smoot. Pay him .5 more than Lucas.

this is a deep draft at corner this year...i wouldnt be surprised if we dont sign either one of them and have some cap room.

Re: Ken Lucas to Carolina - $13 Million Bonus
Smoot will get away. After seeing what happened with Pierce, it seems that the Skins have a plan financially and they will not deviate from it much, even to keep a core Redskin, so Fred will sign somewhere else. I bet they draft a CB and go with Harris this year, with Wilds and the rookie as the nickel and dime backs.
As most, I have mixed feelings about it. On one hand I really wish they would just do what it takes to keep him as a Skin, but on the other hand, it is very nice to see them showing restraint and not throwing money around to pick up all the big names (which Smoot is one of).... |

Re: Ken Lucas to Carolina - $13 Million Bonus
I like Smoot's 'heart of a Redskin' as much as anyone else, but lets not overpay him just because he is a great guy. He is not the only CB in the world.
Frankly, I do not care if Smoot gets away. He is good, but he is not $12m good. He is not a shut down corner. We have other needs besides CB and to spend all of our remaining salary cap space on one abover average players is short sighted. |

I for another am glad that the B&G are showing restraint and not throwing so much money around! It's more grueling waiting for FA news, but the benefit out weighs the cost! Can you imagine ESPN holding a "FA" day, just like Draft Day! The ratings would be phenomenal!

In no way or shape or form should Smoot accept less money than Lucas.
