Disloyalty is widespread...all the way to the top
For anyone who has ever disagreed with me about NFL organizations not being loyal to their players...you're all wrong! Troy Brown's option was not picked up today by the New England Patriots.
Brown's option not picked up Troy Brown! The ultimate team first player. The embodiment of what the Patriots portray themselves as. Take less money? Troy Brown had offensive incentives he didn't reach because started playing DB and couldn't play wide out full time. He puts himself at risk. WRs don't tackle people for a living, but he started playing corner and put himself in a position to do that. He returned punts in the Super Bowl. On Super Sunday I turned to me brother before the game and told him, "If the Pats win, the MVP should go to Troy Brown no matter what impact he has on this game." I believe he inspired that team last season. Everyone talks about their rag tag secondary, he played well and that secondary played well enough to win the Super Bowl. You don't think any CB stepped up his game because Troy Brown playing corner? He had a bigger impact on that team than anyone outside of Tom Brady. This whole situation is horrible. He's been with that team for over a decade. He put hisself on the line. They didn't want to him 5 million next season, so they kicked him out. This is just another reason I think there should be some veteran exception for the salary cap. Sometimes this league just disgusts me. |

Why would you think that the pats will not be able to make a superbowl run next year. Five mill for Brown is alot of money its to bad they couldn't work things out.

Re: Disloyalty is widespread...all the way to the top
I agree with the suggestion for a "Larry Bird" type cap exemption similar to the NBA for an NFL team veteran ...........loyalty should be rewarded...............
Yes Matty..........I know all about "the business" side of sports, that's the reason Spurs gave for cutting Malik Rose Sports has turned into a mercenary foreign legion type of business............players should hold up cardboard signs..."Will play for highest bidder"....and owners can have signs "Whatever makes me the most profit"..........I guess fans have to cheer the uniform and not pay any attention to the player wearing it.....that's what today's teams/leagues have become.......it's awful.

I like that idea too, Redskin - it would make it easy for you to keep some talent you draft. For us it would be great. Arrington, Taylor, Cooley, Samuels, Jansen. All guys we drafted -- all guys we could be able to make a great deal of money to get other plays with to have them exempt. (Obviously none of those players (wait - maybe LaVar and Samuels - can't remember the exact year. Think 2k) anyhow... have 5 years. But one day!

Re: Disloyalty is widespread...all the way to the top
You can still keep your players under this system, there's no reason you can't. It just takes smart management when it comes to the salary cap. We've got Jansen locked up for a while, don't we? And Lavar. And now Samuels?
Football has the best system because guys have to play at a level that justifies the contract that they signed. If they don't play up to that level of pay, guess what, they're canned. Just like the real world. I turn in a shitty financial plan to my boss, I get fired. Troy Brown was good, he sacrificed a lot for the Patriots, but when it comes down to it he's just not worth $5 million. Remember, he was forced into CB duty, but he's not a CB. And the Pats have other WRs that can do what he can do. Loyalty is good, but only if you're loyal to the players who are worth it. Otherwise it's just poor decision-making. |

You think LaVar's contract isn't going to rape us in a few years? Schneed - Lavar comes in and stinks up the joint. How can he justify that salary? Yet if he doesn't produce we can't simply "fire him" we have to let him rot away on our bench making massive amounts of cash. All it takes is one injury to make a players salary devestating to the team.

Until the Pats start losing, I pretty much trust their moves. They've been the best by a long way in this era. Hey, these guys got three rings. That's loyalty enough...

Secondly, you're pretty much making my point for me. I was just saying that the system is set up so that teams can keep players for the long term if they want. There doesn't have to be complete player turnover each year. So if you want to keep a player and be loyal to him, you can fit him under the cap. But if you want to be loyal and also a winner, you better make sure the players you're keeping around are guys that are going to be worth it. If they turn out to suck, well that's your own damn fault for signing them, and you should pay the price. Like Dan Snyder did with Deion Sanders. That's the way it should be. There is room for loyalty, you just have to be smart about it. |

Re: Disloyalty is widespread...all the way to the top
You mean the type of loyalty where we HAVE to renegotiate contracts every offseason to keep people? LaVars contract is massive and what if he falls off, or never becomes his old self from injury? (Just using hypothetical situations, not saying there's any basis for that statement.) His career isn't over, he's still a player, but certainly not worth what he's getting paid (there's a debate if he's worth it healthy) we can't just "dump" him BECAUSE the salary cap forces teams into large signing bonuses.

Re: Disloyalty is widespread...all the way to the top
As for him being forced into CB duty...you don't think he could have just dogged it? Sucked at it? You don't think he could have had people believing he couldn't do it if he didn't want to? $5 million isn't that much in today's NFL. If any coach is worth $5 million, then I can definitely say that Troy Brown is worth $5 million for one year. What bothers me about this is the fact that I love Troy Brown and I like the Pats, but I don't think any organization deserves to win less than the Pats...except maybe us and the Cowboys.
They cut a ton of players who play their ass for them. Let me clarify one thing, when I say "organization," I don't mean Belichick or the coaches, I mean the GM and the personnel director. They cut Milloy, Law, and Brown. That bothers me. Just like the Boys cutting Emmitt and the Niners cutting Rice and the Raiders cutting Tim Brown. None of the 3 of them are particularly young, but they are all good players. I feel like they should have all ended their careers with the Pats, however that's not the way today's NFL works and that bothers me. |

Every team competes because they want to win, i guess we should have just kicked players off when we knew it was over and the season hasn't even started for the patriots they could go 16-0 for all we know so you think that they just came to the conclusion that they weren't gonna be the best of 16 teams in the afc and go to the superbowl and they just descided to roll over and die? The patriots are still favorites for people to win the SB and i don't get what your saying But it is true that it is business and it is cruel but coming from the Team concepted patriots? I would love a player like this with the redskins and this is why so many of us want smoot. Troy is the ultimate team player, he played offense and defense and stepped up for the team when asked |
