Purge is coming for Titans

Some very interesting names here:

The News
Titans owner Bud Adams said his team had to trim $21 million in payroll to get under the 2004 salary cap, and the cuts to reach the 2005 projected cap number of $86 million will run even deeper. "We've been able to hold this team together," Adams told the Associated Press. "It'll be a little hard to do it now at this juncture because we're trying to rob Peter to pay Paul the last nine years to hold this team together as many years as we have."

Our View
Last season the club traded Justin McCareins for draft picks, let Jevon Kearse and Robaire Smith leave via free agency, and cut Eddie George when he refused to take a pay cut. With 10 of their top players combining for almost $77 million in cap space, expect the turnover to be even greater in 2005. Among the potential hits are wide receiver Derrick Mason (due $3.2 million this year), cornerback Samari Rolle ($5.5 million), defensive tackle Kevin Carter ($13.97 million), and both offensive tackles, Brad Hopkins and Fred Miller.

Another thing they fail to mention is that McNair might retire, although Volek has looked pretty solid

Volek is going to turn out just like Jeff George. Being traded all over the place. Give it a couple of years. Oh and I forgot Brad Johnson

Before anyone says that Kevin Carter would be a great addition here, go and watch the NFL Films coverage of the Rams/Titans Super Bowl. Carter was a Ram then. On the final drive, with Tennessee threatening to go in for a score and less than 20 seconds to play, Carter asked to come out of the game. As he walks to the sidelines, Vermeil says to him with total incredulity something close to:

"There's 15 seconds to play in the Super Bowl and you need to come out of the game?"

Mason is no spring chicken but if he became available how could you not give him a look?

I think he's one of the most underrated WR's in the game. 96 catches this year and no Pro Bowl nod.
