Re: Orton Hears the Chiefs

Was just listening to espn radio & they were saying something about Orton not wanting to go to the Chiefs, that he wanted to play for the bears. Andrew Brandt even said that he expects him to become a Bear, not sure how, but it sounded like these guys (D. gottlieb & Ryan Recilo (sp?)) thought Orton w/the Chiefs was not a given even though they claimed him.

Apparently the Cowboys put in a claim for Orton to block the Bears. That's interesting. I mean, I know Kitna is banged up, but still.

Two thoughts on the Bears:

1) Caleb Hanie may or may not grow into a starting NFL quarterback, but he's almost certainly better than the guys out there who would represent other options.

2) Jay Cutler was starting to get tons of credit for an incredibly mediocre level of play. He's been playing well over the Bears winning streak, but the bar for the quarterback in Chicago is not so obscenely high that Caleb Hanie won't be able to compete.

What a dick move. When I was reading about this pft brought up when marty shotenhimer claimed deion after we released him because he knew deion wouldnt play for him. To me that was halarious, but claiming a player and toying w his career when you have nothing against him just to get a better chance at the playoffs is just a dick move and petty thing to do.

So what about when Washington claimed Choice?

Apples and oranges, IMO.

The Skins have obvious flaws in the running game, and Choice was a good pickup at the time. But, it seems the Shanahans didn't like what they saw in practice or the game he played in, so they decided to go with Royster.

I know you think it was purely for espionage purposes, but I'm not as convinced as you, given the circumstances. Picking up cast offs for intel is way overblown, IMO, anyway. Sure the guy may know snapcounts, plays, etc, but so does a good scouting department. There is also the gameplan that is developed the week prior to a game that a player cut two weeks prior would not be privy to.

For the record, I don't have a problem with Dallas putting in a claim. It's good strategy, and if the Skins were good enough to be in that position (thinking about playoff scenarios), I'd hope they would be smart enough to do the same.

I think the blocking Chicago strategy was just a plus. But the real reason Dallas put in that claim is they have no veteran backup. Kitna is probably done for the year with back issue. That leaves Steven McGee as the primary backup with 6 games left and a possible playoff appearance.

Really, Ive seen Cutler play several times over this winning streak and think he's playing at highest level Ive ever seen and deserves a ton of credit. Outside of Forte (who is huge), hes got nothing at receiver and limited talent at oline. In Martz system, he's thrived which is a little surprising to me, but lets be honest he has one of the top 5 arms in game and he can make any throw, at any time on the field.

I know little about Hanie, but I really dont think Orton was a fit with Martz.

Well Cutler wasnt much of a fit until Martz chabged his scheme around to compensate for the terrible offensive line of the Bears. I guess it isnt much of fitting but Cutler was getting killed by that line. I think the scheme was changed so he releases the ball quicker.
