Short Yardage Back!!!??? ALSTOTT to Skins???
I feel we really need a short yardage back.
Anyone think Alstott will end up in DC next season? Would a trade for Rod Gardner or McCants be worth Alstott?

I'd pass. He's had quite a few injury problems and he's prone to fumbling. Maybe 5 years ago I'd be in favor of acquiring him, but not now.

He's way over rated at this point in his career. Maybe even so at his peak.

He was probably always a bit overrated, but he always had those SportsCenter runs where he'd bowl over a few people.

Alstott is in my opinion, and others too actually, one of the most over rated playersof the last decade and even ever. He was a good blocking fullback at one point with below average hands and brought very little in the way of running ability. He was built up by one John Madden over the course of a couple seasons because this is when TB started playing well so Madden at the time was doing plenty of Bucs games. The system he played in called on him numerous times a game to get 1 or 2 yards and he was always able to. Realistically though there were 10-12 other guys with as much talent and less exposure even at the ehight of hsi career. Now he is injury riddled, below average blcoker, way below average runner and basically brings little value to whatever etam he is on next year.

Give alstott his credit. Hes a good blocking back and knowns how to punch it in. Hes not worht much now, after that neck injury last year and his age, but in his prime all he did was score and convert first downs. In my opinion thats the definition of a short yardage back.

I think we should just continue to use Betts and if anything expand his role a bit more. I'm really surprised we haven't used him at the goal line at all this year.
He should get a few short yardage chances against the Vikes. |

well he'll get all the looks against the vikes.
I wonder if Rock will get any playing time as a backup this week. Who is our official third string back? The Vikings have no defense, we better have some offense next week.

WE have had no sucesses this year in the short yardage game. I do not understand why we have not tryed Rock in the short game. If I remember correctly he was pretty effective last year.

I agree that this is a glaring need, but Alstott isn't the answer. THis is a place where an undrafted rookie/cheap FA ought to be available. ALstott is injury prone and old.
This, to my mind, is the real problem with Gibbs offense (not that the passing game isn't too conservative, but still...). We have not been able to pick up 3rd and shorts all year. It shows that our O-line isn't controlling the line of scrimmage. Everything in Gibbs offense works off of that, including the at-persent nonexistent long passing game. If we can't dominate the line of scrimmage with our O-line, nothing will work. It's not a conicidence that the games we looked ok in were games that we ran the ball with authority. GIbbs had the most famous O-line ever in the Hogs, and he won 3 superbowls with them. That's what we're missing. Everything depends on it.

If I remember right someone here suggested, several weeks ago, that we consider Brad Hoover. That might not be a bad idea

Personally I think the guy is a dope and should be cut for his boneheaded plays, but why isn't Mike Sellers a short yardage back? The guy is huge and has some speed, shouldn't he be able to hit a hole and lean for a yard or 2?
