Remember preseason play calling...
When we watched the Skins in the preseason Gibbs ran the same offense. Very conservative, no plays down the field. But he kept telling us that he doesnt want to show teams his playbook, that hes got a bunch of tricks still, and all this other stuff.
Was he saving it for next year when he thinks we have a better chance at making a run and wanted another top five pick first?!?! Plenty has alreayd been said about his play calling, but I just was thinking about how there was all this talk in the preseason about him being conservative so he wouldnt reveal anything. I guess you play how you practice...

Part of holding things back is to let the players master the basics of the offense, something that has taken a lot longer than I'm sure Gibbs expected.
It's not an overly complicated offense, but when you take in to account all the motion, shifting, personnel packages, etc., there's an adjustment period. Next year there won't be any excuses when it comes to the basics. |

Then I hope you place blame where it belongs next year, Matty.

First off I don't ever remember Coach Gibbs saying he has a lot of tricks up his sleeve. I do however remeber a lot of other people saying it. The problem isn't the Scheme as much as it is execution. I remember Gibbs' 1st go round there was an adjustment period no difference this year. If you want to be a doom sayer go right ahead, just don't bask in the glory next year when Joe turns it around.

oh geez, here go the coach comparisons. I didnt meant to start that. I have faith in Gibbs, I know he will turn things around. Gibbs is a very smart man, and if he thinks that his offense doesnt work anymoer then he will bring in another o cordinator. We have the best staff in the league. Hes not afriad to ask for help. Spurrier might have suceeded if his staff was actually qualafied.
Gibbs did say when he was hired that he saw a lot of what he wanted to do in the Rams and Colts offenses and would watch their film and learn from it. I cant say that he learned anything from it though.

It would not have made sense to change the playcalling this year. First, GIbbs and Co. needed to adjust to coaching again. I'm sure that just trying to get back into the grove is hard enough without trying a whole new bag of tricks. I hate that we lost and that things were so conservative, but I also did see our defense. We were in every single game this year. Guys, that is impressive. If Gibbs can come up with 10 pts a game on average, wether it be by execution or playcalling, we could be superbowl champions. I think that a fresh new offensive coordinator may be the answer, but I don't see that coming inless we don't make the playoffs next year.
I'm sure that over the offseason Gibbs will disect every teams offense and add a few things here and there to his that will make things work. Everyone should understand that it still WONT LOOK MUCH DIFFERENT! What Gibbs will do is find a way to:

2% of the teams scoring 10 points or less won this season. We're going to the super bowl with 10 points a game? Sorry.
I agree with your points about what we need to do. I really think we need to spread the field a bit more. How many big catches did Coles get last year playing the slot? That's his home! I think we need a lot more 3 wide, and the occassional 4 wide. |

So should we just open up the offense with total disregard to the fact the offensive line hasn't been able to buy our QB's the time necessary to go downfield?
We've given up just 8 sacks less than last year, if we were playing more wide open we'd probably easily top last year's sack mark. What's the point in getting your QB killed to score a few more points? If opening up the offense was the answer to our woes don't you think Gibbs would have done it? He's got the future in mind with this season. Getting Ramsey pummeled isn't going to do much for us in the long run. |

I dont know if I agree that our line doenst give ramsey time. i dotn think our line opens up holes for portis, but I havent ever seen Ramsey run a play that involves him standing in the pocket. Its always planned dump offs and screen passes.

check the tape from last week, there were a couple of deep drops for Ramsey and you could see him looking down field, but each time the protection broke down and he was either sacked or had to rush his throw.

You would think that Ramsey could scramble with as fast as his feet move when he just standing there
