Great read, I've always wondered about that. It shows how big the mental part of the game is.

Re: Tricks to Memorizing an NFL Playbook
And this, folks, is why NFL teams administer the Wonderlic Test.
Since there is no "blood test" that will measure innate intelligence and since the Combine does not last for two semesters where teams can see how players react to learning new things in a classroom setting, they have to settle for a quick test that correllates - - more times than not - - with innate intelligence levels. I have taken the Wonderlic test several times in various evolutionary stages of the test. It is not perfect but I will say unequivocally: If someone cannot score 10 or higher on the test and they are sober while taking the test, then the most polite thing to say about them is that they may be "intellectually challenged"...

Re: Tricks to Memorizing an NFL Playbook
lol in high school we had 8 run plays and 8 pass plays, 16 total. Well actually 32 total since any play could be flipped.
Even in Madden I tend to stick with one playbook. I always feel lost when I try a new one. |

Re: Tricks to Memorizing an NFL Playbook
Pretty much, the coach will put them in positions where they just do a job and don't have to read/react. Case in point, not to say L. Landry is dumb, but he functions much better in attack mode instead of as a FS or as a C2 safety where there's a lot more information to process very quickly.

Re: Tricks to Memorizing an NFL Playbook
Well, for my offense (as Iīm the OC, I can say my offense) I use 20 plays, most flippable. Nearly every one played from 8 different formations, so we have about 300 combinations my players have to memorize. As they all play for fun and have to work a "real" job to survive, they donīt have that much time. Still they can do it. Why? Cause itīs built logically. Yeah, I rock.

Re: Tricks to Memorizing an NFL Playbook
I think the Al Saunders play book stuff is just the media making a big deal out of it. Back in 87-88 I was a HS QB and we used a numbers system similar to what Saunders and Martz do. Now they have a much higher volume of plays and formations cause they're pros. But it's really not that hard. If you can count 0-9 then you should be able to learn it pretty easily. Now that west coast stuff would be a nightmare to learn cause it doesn't tell everybody what to do.
