Larry, Sonny, and Sam- the radio trio must go
I watched the 1st half of the 1pm games today on NFL RedZone (I mean seriously, has there ever been a better channel?). The Skins game was so annoying, so I went to the gym at halftime.
So during my workout I listened to the Redskins radio broadcast with the espn radio app on my phone. I've been mentioning it here and there on this board for a while, but today sent me over the edge with these morons. There are so many epic fails surrounding the Redskins, and their broadcast team is one of them. As Skins fans, we're all used to discussing the possibility of heads rolling within the organization at this time of year. Larry, Sonny, and Sam are downright pathetic. Larry Michael as a play-by-play guy is flat and not descriptive at all. He does such a poor job verbally painting the on-field picture for the listeners. There is no insight whatsoever provided by Sonny and Sam. They don't offer anything of value to a game broadcast. Me and a few of my buddies could without question deliver a better broadcast each week. Sam in particular just sounds like a slurring, drunk old man. I mean today he called a safety blitz a corner blitz and said "whatever" when Sonny corrected him, he doesn't know the rules, he doesn't know the players' names (he refers to Kemoeatu as "koo-ooo"), and when Kellen Winslow caught a TD, Huff said "boy, he's been around a long time, hasn't he?" To which Larry Michael replied, "that's his son." I laughed out loud at least a half a dozen times during the second half. It's embarrassing to have such a pathetic trio broadcasting such a pathetic on-field product. Sonny and Sam were great Redskins to be sure, but they are getting by on that and nothing else right now. Do you agree that this gaggle of idiots should be replaced? And if so, who would you pick to replace them?

Sam sleeps at least one quarter each game, no joke. He's got to go now.

I stopped listening when Herzog was let go. Larry Michael is simply awful. Sonny is OK but Sam freakin TERRIBLE. I agree, they need to get rid of all three and bring in some new blood there. I'd bring in Joe Theismann and someone besides Michael. Maybe Mike Patrick?

Re: Larry, Sonny, and Sam- the radio trio must go
I listened to the game on the radio today for the first time in a few years and was floored -- floored-- at the lack of football insight, professionalism, and down right incompetence of that crew. I swear I could walk down any supermarket aisle and grab three random guys wearing football jerseys who would put these dudes to shame.
The Winslow example was one of many. At one point Sam, I believe, called Ryan Torrain a little guy and Sonny tried to correct him and he said, well, he's the same size as Clinton Portis. From there the conversation (while the game is going on, mind you) devolved into comparing John ****ing Riggins to Ryan Torrain. I was like, are these cats playing poker and smoking cigars or calling an NFL football game? Oh, and then D.Hall horse collared the runner and the refs missed it. Sam was like, awe, let him play football. They argued about the horse collar rule. Then like clock work, Sam brought some old ass story from the days of Sammy Baugh or something. I wasn't sure if this was an episode of Family Guy or real live radio. If it weren't so funny, it would be sad. But something actually dawned upon me as I painfully endured the sitcom, this team is strangely cursed by it's historic and successful past. We're constantly trying to relive and re-engineer the Gibbs era. I don't know man. The old Skins alumn are just too visible at times and presents a unique challenge to creating a winning culture in today's NFL. |

I only listened to very short excerpts of the radio, but Huff is definitely the most annoying of the bunch.

Re: Larry, Sonny, and Sam- the radio trio must go
Yeah anybody who I've ever listened to a game with has without fail commented on these guys - typically we end up laughing about the inane drivel that comes out of their mouths. I cringe every time I realize I'm not going to be able to watch the game and have to listen to these buffoons. I mean, it's almost to the point of "it's so pathetic it's funny" so I don't mind it as much, but god damn, they just make my head hurt...

Well......Sam is getting a little long in the tooth...or maybe to many years in the league before a concussion rule?

Re: Larry, Sonny, and Sam- the radio trio must go
12th, I was in the same boat as you. I listened to the whole game and it was painful to hear. To be completely honest I didn't actually mind Larry Michael all that much as far as his play-by-play calling goes but Sam and Sonny are terrible.
Every time Sam says a player is short of a first down you just KNOW that he actually got it by a full yard and vice versa. Sonny sucks too but not nearly as much. I'm all for tradition and whatever but it's time for them to go.

Re: Larry, Sonny, and Sam- the radio trio must go
It's safe to say the show has lost much of it's creativity and luster, some due to ever expanding technology, complacency and a reduced listening audience. May be a refresh is in order.

Re: Larry, Sonny, and Sam- the radio trio must go
I find it funny how ( I presume) all the young fans seem to dislike the current announcers and want someone new, but when the radio puts someone new in there all the older fans want Sonny, Sam, Frank.
I think I fall under the older fan.... can we bring back Howard Cosell as our TV anouncer also? |
