Brunell and the Cap: What do we do?
From the Post:
Brunell is due to receive a $500,000 roster bonus on April 1, league sources said, and the Redskins would face a steep $7.165 million salary cap hit in 2005 if he retires or the team releases him before then; if Brunell is cut or retires after June 1, Washington would be penalized $1.93 million against the 2005 cap and another $5.7 million against the 2006 cap. Before this season began, many NFL executives believed the Redskins already were headed toward a salary cap crisis by 2006. We've got some serious cap issues coming up, and Brunell is adding to the trouble. We have to re-sign Smoot. We've got to deal with Samuels' bloated contract. Who else? How can we hold our team together? Ack. CANUCK, SAVE US!!!!

yeah, i've been saying this for while. there's no room for us to improve, and we are in fact gonna have to let people go. Samuels is toast, and I'm not sure about who else. As for Brunell, i think he shows that they never really had a plan for the cap, in spite of what they say. I mean, you can't just drop money like that so profligately. There is so many passionate fans on this board, and that I know personally who seem to really know more about what's best for this team then its front office. I can honestly tell you, most of us would not have signed brunell, and that may have been the difference in our season.
if a crisis is what it takes for danny to wake up, can vinny, and get some real football guys in, so be it. but its hard to be optimistic when your team doesn't get better, and doesn't look like its going to. I've been waiting on next year for over 10 years, and its starting to get old. |

Are you kidding me? They might be able to work out something reasonable... but he's not giving up most of that money... and it doesn't have anything to do with his character... everything he's done has been in good faith.

I just started a new Madden franchise and traded Brunell to the 49ers for a 4th and 5th round pick. Bargain!

There's no way he'll rework his deal to get traded, unless another team REALLY wants him to start and will take over that contract.

Does Miami still want him? Honestly, nobody else would have paid him a fraction of what we did so the odds of a trade are as slim as our playoff chances.

yeah it's bad either way. i mean he'd make a good backup but at that price? i think not. it'd hurt the team's morale. i think u just gotta cut the loss unless you absolutely can't bring in a solid backup.

Ever signing Brunell was stupid. So was signing Chad Morton to the deal they gave him. I don't think they've spent money wisely and they deserve whatever they get.

I think we def. need to cut him this year. Our cap for next year is about 70 mill. So we don't have much room. Were def. gonna have to cut some people. Chap Morton, Ronaldo Wynn. But i don't think it would be wise for us to keep his salary around, especially since we have a massive cap numbers in 2006. But utlimately its gonna come down to do we keep Chris Samuels or Fred Smoot. I think either way we don't let one of them walk, they have trade value. Espically Smoot.

WOW!! We would be the Yankees of the NFL!! :FIREdevil
I don't think it's a good idea. And I really don't think it will happen. But I say we cut Brunell and take the big hit next year. Get it over with!

The cap will be there, trust me. The NFL (and the ratings) love the parity that the salary cap brings. There is no way the cap will go away anytime soon. Too many owners benefit from the cap and just about everyone knows if the cap went away we'd have about $300 million worth of players.
