Mark Schlereth explains training camps under Shanahan

Quote:
Mark Schlereth experienced six training camps under coach Mike Shanahan with the Denver Broncos from 1995-2000, so he’s got a great idea of what 80 Washington Redskins are about to endure.

(He also went through four with Joe Gibbs and the Redskins, and we’ll get to those comparisons in a moment.)

I chatted with Schlereth by phone yesterday to find out what to expect from a Shanahan-led training camp.

I’ll admit that I was intrigued to learn two weeks ago that the Redskins will have 15 two-a-days this summer, but that each afternoon session in those pairings is listed as a “walkthrough.” My initial reaction was to wonder whether having no afternoon practices with pads is a bit soft.
the rest comes after the jump

Haha, great note about how awful Norv Turner's practices were. You think it'll get back to Norv across the country in San Diego?

He said "hineys." LOL...very nice read. Bonous points for a dig at Norv Turner. Three plus hours of practice and hardly any wins?

Good read. Like the insight from a guy like Mark who has been around both teams and 2 of our last 3 head coaches. You can't ask for much more insight than from a guy who has done both.

Glad to hear that Shanahan protects his players for too much contact. That is a really smart move since the season and offseason is longer now and there are too many injuries. We have an older roster and some of our guys do not need the extra contact.

Whatever works. I don't really care if they party all night like it's 1999. Just win.

Another interesting note is how he protects his vets...good to know the coach has a solid amount of common sense

I guess we won't have to worry about vets flaming out by the end of the season.

Well, let's remember many of MS' later teams did flame out, including the 8-8 end that led to his dismissal in Denver.

Absolutely, and here's hoping for that type of decade! I just don't know that saying vets won't flameout is a fair statement given his last few years as a coach.

More like his RBs and defensive players dropped like flies by then...and the defense there wasn't great to start that season either.
