Best Redskins team ever: 1991

No argument from me on this one, pretty obvious choice.

As great as that team was, I still don't think they get the respect they deserve when talking about the all-time great teams in NFL history.

Here's some pretty good respect from an ESPN Page 2 column from a few years back. I'll take #4:

ESPN.com - Page2 - Greatest NFL teams of all time

Yeah no doubt. That team was awesome. This quote from the article was funny:

Redskins quarterbacks were only sacked nine times that season, which is a decent half for the current unit.

They should be ranked in the top 3 of all time!! They would have kicked any Giant, Cowboy or 49er teams ass.

It is truly a shame when the greatest teams are mentioned, this team is....not.

In mentioning the Super Bowl as the best win, the article fails to mention that the Bills scored garbage points and the game was not as close as 37-24 score might indicate.

AMEN! The Skins were up 24-0 early in the 3rd Quarter. The game was a far worse blowout than the final score would indicate.

And Mark Rypien was a statue! That offensive line was incredible!

Re: Best Redskins team ever: 1991

I have mixed feelings about this, basically because the question necessarily brings the '83 team into the debate, which, outside of the 2007 Pats, is, in my opinion, the best SB team to have lost the big game. That team went into the game having won (including playoff games) 28 of its previous 31 games, put up the most regular season points in the history of the league, and outscored its NFC playoff competition 73-7 through the first seven quarters of play. What happened to the team in the following five quarters was an absolute disaster, but was just as much an absolute fluke. It's been said by many that the team's confidence got a shake in that 4th quarter against the Niners that it simply couldn't recover from going into the big game. Maybe so--it makes sense, given that the team they lost to in the SB was a team they beat in the regular season. Regardless, I know that any SB loss leaves bitterness for any fan, but I think that's the team we're talking about as the franchise's best-ever if they hadn't lost that game.

Man, what a way to cast a shadow over an otherwise positive thread.

Nice post . I actually believe our '87 team was better than the '91 team , not that it matters , both were awesome . The '82 and '83 teams were powerful < we won SB 17 minus Art Monk > , and had yet to draft D. Green and C. Mann .... we were spoiled in the '80's !

Bman I feel sorry for you not being able to gloat in our glory years. I was in middle school and high school for our runs. It was awesome to grow up to those teams. (Well not the 82 and 81 team)

You will get to see a great team one day I am sure of it and your long time loyalty to the Redskins will be rewarded. This is an awesome franchise to be a fan of!!

Although the 87 team is my fav Redskin team of all time they were not as good as the 91 team. The 91 team dominated from start to finish. Simply not the case with that 87 team. That team was up and down all year long. If you remember that team was probably the 3rd best in the conference that year. Chicago and SF were the two best teams in the NFC. But that team got hot at the right time.

Great post and arguments for it though. Wish I had been around to see it.
