ESPN's Schefter channels his energy into NFL

washingtonpost.com

A little Shanahan insight worth noting here:

Quote:
Schefter also believes there is no question that Shanahan will go into his first season with Jason Campbell as his starting quarterback, despite the constant inconsistency over his first five years in the league.

"It's a quarterback's league. Each of the 12 starting quarterbacks in the playoffs was either a first-round pick or had gone to the Pro Bowl," Schefter said. "The Redskins do have a first-round quarterback who's had some success, but not enough. Mike is the right guy to get it out of Jason. Mike will provide him that environment. He will put him in an environment where he can succeed.

"The Redskins have the fourth overall pick, and even if you use that on a quarterback, it's a rookie quarterback. It makes no sense. Jason is a restricted free agent, so they're kind of stuck with each other. Either the relationship blossoms or it doesn't. But I'd be stunned if Campbell wasn't the quarterback next year."

I think it's the right move at this point. Probably the most logical move. Draft some OL, maybe pick a QB later in the draft, and fill some holes through free agency. It might take JC a while to get over being shell-shocked, but he should perform better with some protection. I'm all for building this line first and foremost.

I saw this yesterday too. It's the best public statement yet that gives us an idea about JC's immediate future. I'm hopeful that he's here next year at least.

I think any other move short of tendering him the top and getting a boat load in draft picks is downright stupid. And no one is going to give us a 1st and 3rd for him. But once he's gone then what?

"Go into his first season" is the key phrase there. It's not the same as "finish his first season"

I wouldn't read too much into that, Shanny has left the "competition" open, but I doubt much competition will surface for JC in camp. We have much greater needs than QB to use our #4 pick on and believe we will.

Maybe (hopefully) Collins will be swapped out for someone like Rosenfels, but I don't see any replacements on the horizon, the FA QBs are weak this year and unless a later-round pick or Colt Brennan somehow emerge to challenge Jason, it's his job.

I think Campbell will do about as well as Plummer did for Shanahan in Denver (they're pretty similar to me). As long as our running game is on-point, that should be good enough. Plummer stuck around in Denver for quite a while, so it seems Shanahan was satisfied with him and his abilities.

If I recall correctly Plummer ran a lot of bootlegs, roll-outs, etc. under Shanahan. Stuff to get him on the move and also to probably cut the field in half and simplify his reads.

Yeah, I would say Plummer was more mobile than JC has been recently, but I think that will change under Shanahan.

yeah, I remember Plummer rolling out a lot in that O. He was a hard qb to figure, seemed on the verge of being really good but couldn't put it all together. I think if anything JC is at least more consistent that he was.

Yes, we'll have some sort of rookie qb this next year. He'll most likely start on the bench. It will depends on JC's success whether he'll remain on the bench.

Staples of the Shanahan offense, regardless of who is under center. I think JC would benefit from being on the move.

Re: ESPN's Schefter channels his energy into NFL

ok food for thought. If we are going to go into the draft with the mindset that OL is the need, and then use that thinking to draft a t with the fourth pick and with the 36 pick to draft a c/g (ie a player who can do both ). Why use a late round pick on a QB? Most of the good QBs in the NFL are first round guys. We have JC for next year. I am not sold on any of the QBs in the draft at all as being top notch NFL starting QB material. My point is keep JC this year see how he performs for Shanny. Draft OL and Defense. If we are going to be using more of a 3-4 scheme we need defensive players who would fit that system. Use this draft to rebuild alot of the team and worry about drafting a QB next year. Why rush the QB position, AND why draft a qb late in the draft (much higher fail rate with later round guys and we already have a late rounder on the team)? I just would not waste a pick on a QB this year and I believe that is what we would be doing if we don't use the first pick on one. EVEN then drafting a qb at 4 would be stupid as well because that is not the IMMEDIATE need of this football team.

I agree if JC fail draft Locker next year simple that way when Locker gets here he already has protection around him.
