Browns Reportedly Fire GM George Kokinis

Sources: Cleveland Browns GM George Kokinis escorted out of team facility by security | Cleveland Browns - cleveland.com - - cleveland.com

Firing the General Manager in-season, something most fans want Snyder to do to Vinny.

Still, for the Browns this is a questionable move. Especially if they replace him (if even just temporarily) with Bernie Kosar.

Kokinis deserves better than this in my opinion. He'll bounce back quickly. Maybe here?

Cleveland's FO were the Kings of April when they landed both Joe Thomas and Brady Quinn in the first round a couple years back. With K2 and Braylon Edwards, the future looked bright. I blame Mangini and his waffling with the QB position. His ouster can't be far behind.

Well, Kokinis has only been GM since January. Odd to cut bait on a GM that quickly. The guy spent 13 years in the Baltimore front office. Hard to judge his body of work in Cleveland on 8 games. Sounds like he got a raw deal from another circus organization.

Don't much about him, but the timing might be heaven sent.

How do you fire a GM after only a few months? It's not like he was taking over a playoff team so you have to wonder what Randy Lerner was expecting. Maybe he's just trying random things to pacify the Dawg Pound.

Lerner reportedly interested in bringing in Ernie Accorsi as a consultant now. He apparently didn't like that there was an obvious chain of command from Kokinis to Mangini. But what did he expect? Mangini brought Kokinis in.

He'll make a big push for Cowher, Marty, or Holmgren I'm sure

But it would be odd if they actually did bring in Accorsi as a consultant since he reportedly gave Lerner the seal of approval on Kokinis.

Either way, it's an ugly situation in Cleveland. Kudos to Lerner at least for starting to take action to correct it. I think he fired the wrong guy though

Hell, I'm sure Kokinis doesn't mind. He'll get a job somewhere, and the Browns still owe him 3.5 years worth of paychecks.

I personally think Eric Mangini is not a good head coach at all. I thought he was a bad hire.

Browns owe a lot of people a lot of money that are no longer with the organization. I think it's like 20+ million for Savage, Crennel, and now Kokinis

Re: Browns Reportedly Fire GM George Kokinis

Having spent significant time in the Baltimore FO, Kokinis would be a significant upgrade over Cerrato. A big part of Baltimore's winning formula is drafting players who dominate in the trenches. Cerrato missed on Jared Gaither, whom Baltimore landed in the 5th round of the Supplemental Draft. You can bet that Kokinis was one of the guys who scouted Gaither at U of Maryland.

Wouldn't it be something if Cowher went back to the AFC North coaching the team with which he began his career (actually, I guess technically that's the Ravens now, but you get it)? And Marty spent I think 7 or 8 years in Cleveland, and that was his first HC job. You can go home again?

Holmgren, well, I'm sure Lerner wouldn't bat an eye at making him HC and GM. That of course would not be a good choice.

Re: Browns Reportedly Fire GM George Kokinis

It seems like Lerner wants a separation between coach and GM, so I don't think he'd bring in anyone to serve a dual capacity.

Kokinis really did not have much to do with the draft process in Baltimore. He was more like their Morocco Brown or a lite Bruce Allen. Kokinis dealt more with contract negotations, trades, free agency, scouting from other pro leagues, etc. He does have college scouting experience (but I think that was from his earlier days with the original Browns)

You mean before or after the Kokinis hire? Didn't he let Mangini hand-pick Kokinis? Even though they are two different people, it doesn't seem like much separation when you're letting your HC choose your front office.
