The Forgotten 2nd Rounder...Fred Davis
Lost in the shuffle during the opening season hype and the,for once, positive news of M. Kelly being awarded the starting number two WR spot is the fact that F. Davis has not been spoken of since his preseason TD three long weeks ago.
Now unless there is a covert operation to sneak attack teams with Davis as a weapon I'd say that he is going to see his fair share of hardcore pine coming into this season. What's your thoughts on the silence of Davis's playing status? For being the best athlete on the board during the mid 2nd round I'd say he should at least have some expectation of contributing this year much like Thomas and Kelly, his 2nd round brethren. Here Yahoo even has him listed as 3rd string TE below Yoder...yuck! Washington Redskins - Depth Chart - NFL - Yahoo! Sports

Re: The Forgotten 2nd Rounder...Fred Davis
Ya bring up a good point. We kept hearing about Kelly/Thomas, Thomas/Kelly, and a lot of Campbell. Recently it's been Colt, Chase, Mason, and Mitchell. Everyone has wondered if Kelly or Thomas will step up. Who will take the #2 spot. Will they contribute at all?
but for whatever reason Davis falls through the cracks. Hardly even mentioned. Everytime the others were mentioned I wanted to say......"and Davis." I think lots of people on here kinda expected Davis to take the #2 spot which leaves me scratching my head wondering why it's like ho-hum that Davis is listed as #3. Is Yoder that much better then Davis? I have to imagine being in the league 6-7 yrs Yoder had to have picked up knowledge of how to play the game. Yoder, for the last 2 yrs, would retire only to be called back into service by the Skins. but I only saw him make one TD in preseason just like Davis. I keep hope that Davis is the 007 of the Skins. Their keeping him a secret for the season when they can empliment the 2 TE sets, but it's hard when even Zorn skips over him and mentions that Cooley will get a lot of chances with the ball. Cooley will have more TD's this yr. I mean Zorn could have said "the TE's". |

Re: The Forgotten 2nd Rounder...Fred Davis
I think for the first time in a long time we have so many weapons to talk about it's easy for one to slide under the radar. Mitchell has gotten a lot of attention so far and deservedly so. For a rookie to come in and play like he has, well.. he grabs a lot of media attention. Kelly stepping up after an injury plaqued year has been fantastic as well and makes a great story. There have been a lot of good stories coming out of the Redskins preseason with Orakpo, AH, Jarmon, Kelly, Mitchell, JC, the o-line etc. You don't hear as much about Cooley, ARE, or Portis but these guys are supposedly doing very well and of course, a lot is expected of them. Kelly's progress has even made DT look like he's not doing very well even though I think he's made progress from last year and expect much more contribution from him this year. With so many "new" stories to talk about, maybe Davis just isn't getting as much attention as he would have if there wasn't so many other good stories to talk about. At least that's my hope.

Call me crazy but I think Fred Davis will eventually become our starting tightend with a new coaching regime on deck. Davis is bigger than Cooley and has great hands too. Davis is also more athletic. I love Cooley to death but I could see us getting a couple of picks for him in the offseason to start the rebuilding process along with Moss and Portis.

Not sure where everyone has been but Davis has gotten a lot of praise for his offseason work and how much he has improved. I think he's going to see plenty of action.

I'm really happy with Kelly's progress, but Thomas and Davis need to make some major strides or they are headed towards bust-ville.

Re: The Forgotten 2nd Rounder...Fred Davis
It has been said many times and I'll say it once more.
When it comes to knowledge, experience, ability to succeed, etc, there are reasons why Coaches and their staffs coach and fans bitch? Because that is what our qualifications allow us to do..........get it? I doubt the Skins staff have overlooked any aspect of "player use" and have plans to use them where most useful. This is not to say a fan has never had an original idea, and a coach has never been wrong, but AT LEAST give our coaching staff credit for the obvious.....Fred will play

I feel like his hype really died down after fumbling twice in a preseason game.

My memory seems to think that Portis is always in praise of Davis ...maybe he didn't get the memo to keep our "007 Agent" under wraps.

Re: The Forgotten 2nd Rounder...Fred Davis
Davis will get his opportunities this year, but playing behind a pro bowl TE he's only going to be a situational player. Here's hoping he makes the most of the opportunities he gets, possibly in two TE sets. I'm really rooting for Davis to succeed.

I'm aware that coaches have more on field involvement with players and thus an intimate knowledge of who should be playing, however if Davis is 3rd string TE and the team is fine with that, than he is being held to a lower expectation than his 2nd round counterparts. Keep in mind too that he technically is the most athletic of the picks as we had to draft WR for need last year.
