Last week of preseason: DEFENSE ROSTER SPOTS

The Washington Redskins are entering the last week of preseason, which means cut downs are on the way, roster finalization will be complete soon after Thursday night. Some think the roster cuts will be conservative, but Jim Zorn reportedly said on the John Thompson show, expect some roster surprises. Interesting.

Barnes would have to really move up the learning curve quickly to take Los' spot next year. Honestly I don't see much of a market for Los...he's just not been a big-play, turnover producing type of CB that teams will dole out the green for. I think if he goes somewhere else it's only because we decide we definitely don't want him.

Re: Last week of preseason: DEFENSE ROSTER SPOTS

I just don't see Rogers back. I think the Redskins have gotten frustrated with his dropped balls and I think he has gotten frustrated at times. I think Barnes was drafted to take his place next year. Do I agree with that? Not really. But it is a gut feeling. Same gut feeling I had when they left Antonio Pierce and Ryan Clark go.

Re: Last week of preseason: DEFENSE ROSTER SPOTS

That's basically how I see the roster panning out. Whether or not Rogers is back depends on the sort of season he has this year. If he plays well, he'll earn a ton from someone. Will Snyder pay him a ton after just giving a ton to DeAngelo Hall? Well, it should be an un-capped year in 2010 so consider that.

That nagging calf injury is not going to help him out either. Is there some sort of calf-attacking bug going on in Redskins Park?? Last season, wasn't this a problem for Jason Taylor, Shawn Springs, and Rogers?? Now Rogers has this problem again.

While Rogers' next contract is probably going to fall in the "value" category, trust me when I say that *other teams* know how good Rogers is. If we don't protect him, then other teams will gladly take him.

Los is getting a monster contract from somebody if we dont resign him. Id like to see him in a Skins uniform next year, my only concern are the injuries.

Re: Last week of preseason: DEFENSE ROSTER SPOTS

Free Agents Cornerbacks next year.

Top Cornerbacks:

Age as of 9/1/09

Dunta Robinson, Houston Texans (27)
After long-term contract negotiations stalled, the Texans placed the franchise tag on Robinson, who has yet to sign and report to camp. Robinson returned to form late last season from a knee injury that cost him 7 games in 2007 and 5 more in 2008. Recently, he stated that he would be in camp if Texans promised him that they would not place the tag on him again next offseason, something the team is reluctant to give. Robinson will return to the team in time for the Texans’ first regular season game, regardless of how the episode plays out, but it’ll be interesting to see how the situation unfolds again next offseason.

Carlos Rogers, Washington Redskins (28)
In a division with a number of talented corners, Carlos Rogers is arguably the best complete cover corner. He breaks on the ball well as shown by his league-high 24 passes defended. Playing on the last year of his rookie deal, Rogers hasn’t been fazed by a lack of negotiations. With Shawn Springs gone, the Redskins will count on Rogers more than ever.

Ellis Hobbs, Philadelphia Eagles (26)
The Patriots made a splash this offseason when they decided to trade Hobbs to the Eagles for a pair of 5th round selections. The Eagles always seem to have a healthy group of corners to play behind a blitz-heavy scheme up front. While Hobbs is only expected to compete for a starting job in Philly, he could easily become an immediate starter on a number of teams around the league. Hobbs’ new team does seem interested in signing him to a long-term deal as a potential starter down the line to replace a disgruntled Sheldon Brown

Marlin Jackson, Indianapolis Colts (26)
Marlin Jackson has been a key defender inside the Colt’s secondary for the past several years, especially in nickel packages where he moves in to cover the slot receiver. Jackson has started the season on the PUP list, but is inching ever closer to returning to the practice field. The Colts are always a cap-strapped team so it’s not guaranteed that Jackson will re-sign with Indy.

Terrence McGee, Buffalo Bills (28)
The Bills really can’t afford to lose their top cornerback in Terrence McGee. He began his career as a return man and sub-package corner, but has gradually grown into one of the league’s best. McGee is a consistent threat to break on the ball, getting his hands on many passes every year. The Bills signed him to a 4 year, $18 million extension in 2005, so expect that number to significantly increase this offseason.

Other Notable Free Agents:
Leigh Bodden, New England Patriots (27)
Dre’ Bly, San Francisco 49ers (32)
Nick Harper, Tennessee Titans (34)
Walt Harris, San Francisco 49ers (35)
Anthony Henry, Detroit Lions (32)
Roderick Hood, Cleveland Browns (27)
Ken Lucas, Seattle Seahawks (30)
Richard Marshall, Carolina Panthers (24)
Karl Paymah, Minnesota Vikings (26)
Stanford Routt, Oakland Raiders (26)
Deshea Townsend, Pittsburgh Steelers (33)
Fabian Washington, Baltimore Ravens (26)
Tramon Williams, Green Bay Packers (26) – Restricted FA
Usama Young, New Orleans Saints (24) – Restricted FA

I rather have Carlos than any of those other peeps.
This sort of thing bugs me with the Skins. We give away draft picks and when we do get someone with talent we let to many of them go. Rodgers, McIntosh and JC are up for contracts...we need to keep 2 of the 3. Dockery and Pierce left...I thought these guys were pretty talented at the time and wanted them to stay.

Re: Last week of preseason: DEFENSE ROSTER SPOTS

Unless Dunta Robinson has a pro-bowl type comeback year, Rogers is head and shoulders above the rest of the class.

PennSkinsfan, you forgot Chris Wilson in the Linebackers section. I have no idea if he should be classified as a backup lock or a bubble guy, but I think he's making the team because he's the only guy can back up Orakpo at the new SLB position in the defense. I guess that would make him a lock.

Rogers will be back if he earns his new deal, which basically means he has to hang on to some INTs for a change.

Yeah I can't see not paying him if he shows he's worth it. Basically that's what every player needs to do. Show us the play, we'll show you the money.

Re: Last week of preseason: DEFENSE ROSTER SPOTS

Yeah, well unfortunately when tend to over show the money to guys who come here and dont produce. Or we will give way a draft pick for someone who doesnt do anything. I think Carlos is the best talent on the above list. The Tryon and Barnes picks I saw to push Smoot for the nickle corner spot and dont see either one as starters at this point. Maybe they play the nickle a year and jump to push into the starting spot in a couple years. I know its jumping ahead, but I see drafting another corner in the first round again as a complete waste, when Los has developed fairly well. Los needs to stay on the field period. If he does that, he should get a contract.

Sorry. An oversight. I dont think Wilson is a bubble guy. I think Wilson has a lock on a roster spot.

Thats what Im saying...I hope they resign Carlos...I can't believe Ellis Hobbs is on that list either...I think he's trash.

I'd love if they keep this roster intact, provided JC and a receiver(s) progress

Add another d end, offensive tackle and lb through draft/free agency.
