Looking Ahead to the 2010 Draft: Depth
Here I'll use this thread to show how deep each position is expected to be and also try and relate what that might mean for the Redskins. Anyway we'll see how accurate this is come 2010.
Quarterback: Not much word on how the deep the class is but right now theres two sure fire first rounders in Sam Bradford and Colt McCoy. McCoy's former understudy could also emerge as a first round pick though it would also mean he would have to come out early. Chances are if the Redskins determine they need a QB they'll attempt to trade up to get one of the top 2 in McCoy and Bradford, especially considering that in 2010 they'll have the ammo to execute a trade. Top 3 Prospects 1. Sam Bradford - Oklahoma 2. Colt McCoy - Texas 3. Jevan Sneed - Ole Miss Running Back: This class could be very deep with a prospect such as Joe McKnight currently ranked 6th among those that will be draft eligible. Should CP break down this group will become a high priority. Top 3 Prospects 1. C.J Spiller - Clemson 2. Jonathan Dwyer - Georgia Tech 3. Chris Brown - Oklahoma Wide Reciever: Currently projected to be a shallow class but usually these guys end up emerging by the end of the year. Either way there isn't exactly a Calvin Johnson or Michael Crabtree that will be draft eligible in 2010. Top 3 Prospects 1. Dez Bryant - Oklahoma State 2. Brandon LaFell - LSU 3. Arrelious Benn - Illinois Tight End: Everyone knows of Oklahoma Tight End Jermaine Gresham, but after that the TE class is projected to be shallow. Hopefully the Redskins won't need a TE come next year. Top 3 Prospects 1. Jermaine Gresham - Oklahoma 2. Rob Gronkowski - Arizona 3. Dennis Pitta - BYU Offensive Tackle: Fortunately for the Redskins this is projected to be another stellar class with as many as four seniors projected to be first rounders. Underclassmen will only serve to bump that number up come April. So should the Williams experiment falter and Heyer end up proving that he is unable to open running lanes the Redskins will be able to look at the draft to get some options. Top 3 Prospects 1. Russell Okung - Oklahoma State 2. Trent Williams - Oklahoma 3. Bryan Bulaga -Iowa Guard: The Redskins will need Rhinehart to step up as this is currently projected to be a pretty shallow class. Top 3 Prospects 1. Mike Pouncey - Florida 2. Sergio Render - Virginia Tech 3. Rodney Hudson - FSU Center: Fans will be sad to hear that this class doesn't even come close to this years group. Though the depth in this group isn't nearly as bad as Guard and TE is projected to be. Top 3 Prospects 1. John Estes - Hawaii 2. Josh McNeil - Tennessee 3. Thomas Austin - Clemson Defensive End: Not sure how deep this class is but there is only one potential Left End near the top of the class in Carlos Dunlap. Other then that you have a bunch of guys in the 240-260 range. Top 3 Prospects 1. Greg Hardy - Ole Miss 2. Greg Romeus - Pitt 3. Carlos Dunlap - Florida Defensive Tackle: This is projected to be a very deep group especially at the top. The thing is the Redskins probably won't be looking for a DT next year, at least near the top of the draft. Top 3 Prospects 1. Gerald McCoy -Oklahoma 2. Ndamukong Suh - Nebraska 3. Terrence Cody - Alabama Outside Linebacker: Currently projected to have a decent amount of depth but nothing special. Ironic thing is that Texas Sergio Kindle, an OLB last year, is currently being plugged in at Orakpo's old end spot. Anyway the Redskins will probably need to give this group a look. BC's Mark Herzlich was projected to be at the top of this class but he's battling cancer right now so football is obviously an afterthought at this point. Top 3 Prospects 1. Sergio Kindle - Texas 2. Sean Weatherspoon - Missouri 3. Mike Morgan - USC Middle Linebacker:Another solid class but nothing special. Brandon Spikes is definitely considered the crowned jewel of the class at this point. Either way the Redskins are going to have to address this position at some point or another though it would be great if Fletcher could play forever. Top 3 Prospects 1. Brandon Spikes - Florida 2. Rolando McClain - Alabama 3. Sean Lee - Penn State Cornerbacks: Horrible class with only one player projected to be a first rounder. That of course being Trevard Lindley from Kentucky. So with that said it would probably be in the teams best interest to find a way to keep Rogers. Top 3 Prospects 1. Trevard Lindley - Kentucky 2. Joe Haden - Florida 3. Javier Arenas - Alabama Free Safety: With the exception of Taylor Mays this is projected to be a weak group at least as far as the seniors are concerned. Either way the Redskins should be set at safety for a long time, unless of course you read PFT on a regular basis. Top 3 Prospects 1. Taylor Mays -USC 2. Kam Chancellor - Virginia Tech 3. Anderson Russell - Ohio State Strong Safety: This is another weak group with the only real notable being Myron Rolle who's currently ranked as the 5th best player in the class. Of course that could change should he work out well, if anything the interviews will be a breeze. Top 3 Prospects 1. Eric Berry - Tennessee 2. Chad Jones - LSU 3. Darrell Stuckey - Kansas

Re: Looking Ahead to the 2010 Draft: Depth
So there you have it. Heres a rundown of the depth.
Deep Positions: DT, OT, RB Solid Postions: QB, OLB, MLB, DE, C Weak Positions: WR, TE, OG, CB, FS, SS Gil Brandt also has some nice rankings posted complete with pretty pictures. Only catch is the fact that rankings are for Seniors only. QB | RB | WR | TE | G/C | OT | DE | DT | MLB | OLB | S

Looks like the 2010 draft will have some good players at the exact positions we need.

Re: Looking Ahead to the 2010 Draft: Depth
Thanks for the info DirtBag. This coming season will really determine where we will need players, especially when we have several starters in the last year of contracts. If our offense struggles this season, we are going to have an all offense draft next year...QB, RB, OT, C, OG most likely would be our focus. I'd really like us to extend Rocky and Carlos right now. If Orakpo excells at OLB he would stay there, putting DE again as a need next year. The age and health of the o-line is something we are going to have to address next draft for sure.

Re: Looking Ahead to the 2010 Draft: Depth
good post in these slow times dirt. Regardless of what happens this season (aside from trades), we will need to draft an OT first. The only way that changes is if a trade for one is made before or during this season. Samuels is old & the RT spot isn't yet settled.
We need O line across the board, too bad it looks like a weak class for guards. I was shocked that Sergio Render from VT is on that list. He's been praised for his athleticism, but not as much for his blocking, which is kind of essential for that position! |

Re: Looking Ahead to the 2010 Draft: Depth
Great post Dirt. I really hope the team addresses the offensive line, possibly looking for a long term replacement for Samuels. I wouldn't be opposed to getting a RB in the first round, of course the question is how would this sit with Portis.

QB | RB | WR | TE | G/C | OT | DE | DT | MLB | OLB | S Also a little bit of irony: "Either way there isn't exactly a Calvin Johnson or Michael Crabtree that will be draft eligible in 2010." Lol, I think I spoke to soon.

Re: Looking Ahead to the 2010 Draft: Depth
Just putting it out there...
We MAY have a TOTALLY different Redskins next year... New Coach (Cowher? Shanahan?) , possibly a Team President/GM (Holmgren) if this season goes like lasts... 8-8, fading down the stretch, Campbell mediocre.. That group will want a new QB (Free Agent or Bradford/McCoy)... This is a HUGE, MEANINGFUL season for the 2010 and beyond Redskins

Re: Looking Ahead to the 2010 Draft: Depth
Redskin fans would riot if we selected a defensive player in the first round next year. The only D players, at this point, I could see being selected before an interior O lineman are Ndamukong Suh and Taylor Mays. The thought of Ndamukong Suh and Haynesworth in the middle is unbelievable. I know we're deep in the safety position but Taylor Mays is a beast. I'd never go as far to compare him to Sean Taylor, but he could be potentially close. The downside is if either of them are still on the board when we draft, things probably didn't go as planned in 2009 - 2010 season. On another note, I know I may be slightly biased as a PSU fan, but Evan Royster, a VA product certainly deserves a look at RB in the top 3... IMO.

Re: Looking Ahead to the 2010 Draft: Depth
I know, witht he talent Miami puts out they should perform a lot better on gameday. I always think of how awesome Landry and Taylor would be right now if Taylor wouldn't have passed. We need Offensive linemen but if we could get Mays it would be hard to pass up.
