John Madden retires
John Madden retires as NFL broadcaster - NFL - SI.com
Can't say I was his biggest fan, but he was a legend and I don't think primetime football will be the same without him.

Re: John Madden retires
I'm actually kinda bummed about this news. Say what you will about the guy but he's definitely a legend.

Re: John Madden retires
Wow. No more Kalas or Madden (though Madden is at least still alive).
So...who replaces him now?

Re: John Madden retires
When in his prime he was at his best!!! In the last couple of years he was very irrelevant. I wonder who will replace him!

Re: John Madden retires
He was... at one time he was viewed as the next Madden.
It's going to take a while for the public to get that bad taste out of their mouths from his GM days though, if ever. |

Re: John Madden retires
Millen was a good announcer. Who knows, maybe he can overcome his inept reputation.
As for Madden, he was terrific for a while but his act wore kinda thin on me lately. It will certainly be different without him around. If you think about it, he was my generation's Howard Cosell - the announcer, like him or hate him, everybody knows.

Re: John Madden retires
loved Madden, but I'm glad he's getting out now. He never seemed to have the chemistry w/Michaels that he did w/Summerall & these last few years his wit & attention to detail just isn't what it used to be. I would guess that the job wasn't much fun for him anymore.

Re: John Madden retires
I still enjoy watching Madden's games, mainly for the comedy he provides. Aside from the sometimes strange things he says like "the team that scores more points will probably win", he's a very knowledgeable commentator, unlike some of them we get (Joe Buck, Gumbel, others).
I'll miss him. Hopefully his video games will never retire.

Re: John Madden retires
Well, with no more Favre to talk about, I think we all saw this coming.

Re: John Madden retires
Hopefully they can hire Greg Gumble to replace him!
Seriously though, Madden wasnt the best announcer ever -- but he was entertaining. Frank Calliendo (sp) just became unemployed....
