I'm moving...

Tomorrow is moving day, we're all packed up and ready to go but I'm kinda bummed. We're moving out of what was our first house, a nice townhouse we bought 3 years ago and have done a lot of work on to fix up to our liking. Paint in every room, a remodeled bathroom, new tile in the entry way, stainless steel appliances, a "designed to sell" look that sold the place in no time in a down market and recession, and of course a lot of nice memories. It was a place we bought with the intentions of staying for a while. 5-10 years we figured. My wife said she always had a feeling we wouldn't be here long. Then her Mother died in September and life threw us a serious curve ball. One of her Mom's last wishes was for us to move into her house. She said it would be crazy not to. We've worked hard to get the new place remodeled so it doesn't feel like her Mom's house anymore. That would have been too tough to deal with had we not. We had a contractor that totally screwed us, and we now have a new contractor that has been a god send and is doing an incredible job in getting this turned into a dream home for us. A townhouse right on the lake. Country club-like amenities. A boat slip. No mortgage. No maintenance. Did I mention no mortgage? Life should be good. But it's definitely bittersweet. When we move in we'll be reminded of the reason why we're there. I know in time that will fade. But right now I'm bummed.

I'm just rambling, thanks for reading.

Wow...so...you've got your Redskins Room all set up?

Seriously though, moving is huge. Your move seems um, huger.

We'll hold down the fort whilst you move

Re: I'm moving...

So how far is your new house from your old one? I've never owned a home- my girlfriend and I plan on buying in the next 18 months or so. So I don't know the nostalgia that comes with that first house.

Moving is always a pain in the ass, but it sounds like ultimately you're in a better situation. Great peace of mind not having a mortgage either. Nothing beats 100% equity, especially in today's market. I'm glad you guys found a contractor to save you from that nightmare guy who butchered your flooring. What are the folks like who are buying your old house?

Anyway, congrats. I'm sure you're bummed a bit now, but once you're settled in you'll be good to go.

Salut!

Oh man moving is rough, but I've found a bright side having done it too many times... you tend to get rid of the stuff you probably should have years ago. Whether it's the bag(s) of clothes you want to give to Goodwill or a ratty old piece of furniture you should have replaced long ago moving is the perfect time.

Congrats and sorry about the loss of your mother in law. No mortgage sounds awesome.

This is going to be a tough, but great move for us. I'm not looking forward to the ordeal ahead- but we have each other.

I'm warning ya Matty, I'm gonna be a wreck today. Its the beggining of a new life!

Hey, Matty's better half! Nice to see you on the Warpath. And let me please thank you for allowing Matty to spend time online maintaining this site. It's turned into a great community and all of us who love it here have him to thank for it.

Good luck to both of you in your move, it sure does sound like a bittersweet transition. The difficulty of the situation is not lost on me, but just think, your mother/mother-in-law would much rather have you living in the home than someone she never knew. And enjoy the mortgage-free life!

Good luck buying a home with a girl friend. Everyone I know that has tried that wished they never did.

Matt, so I guess you got that mess all fixed from that other contractor and I hope it did not set you back to much $.

We've been together almost 6 years, and marraige is basically a foregone conclusion. I almost proposed about two years ago, but decided to wait. I'm currently pricing some rings....

So while I appreciate your optimism (not), we'll be just fine.

On a side note, my best friend purchased a home with his long time girlfriend about 5 years ago. They are now married, still live in that house, and just had their first baby on Christmas Day.

we're still under construction but the floors were re-finished and they look great. I'll get some new pics posted once everything is done.

Re: I'm moving...

No mortgage so that makes the move better. I hate packing and unpacking.

Sorry to hear about your wife's loss. I just lost my mom 11-30-08 so trust me I know what your wife is going through. When I had to go back in my mom's place I felt weird but I got over the weirdness quickly. We are in the process of selling/renting the house out though.

I just had two friend who dated these girls for a long time and they purchased a house and both relations went to shit in about a year. One had no problem selling their house back 4 years ago but the other friend has had the house on the market for 7 months and are going to loose money.
