Campbell Contract?

Is it a good thing that Jason Campbell hasn't gotten a contract extension or not?

From what I hear the FO is rolling the dice here. If he does go into the season without a contract then he could do well, increase his worth in FA, and be less inclined to return to a team that didn't place any faith in him (especially when he can make more money elsewhere).

The flip side to this is that the FO isn't sold on him, or he'd have a contract extension already. If they do spend some dough on him and he flops we've got a really good bench warmer for two seasons on contract with less money for FA.

Is this a gamble? I'm inclined to think it is and a stupid one to boot. Even if the worst happens and he's not that good. We'd be better off cutting an older injury prone player with a heavy cap hit. Paying JC would be peanuts in comparison. Even if he was on the bench we'd have at worst, a mediocre player who knows the system, isn't a rookie, and has already called the plays.
He waited his turn, did everything that was asked of him, and didn't complain about it either. We could franchise him but we'd still have to replace him if someone said deal.

If someone knows more than I do about this situation, please chime in. I started this thread to learn as much as I did to get a feel of how everyone else thinks.

Re: Campbell Contract?

I don't think any teams are going to be giving out big contracts casue there is no salary cap in 2010 or 11 and there could be a strike. Someone want to confirm that?

Re: Campbell Contract?

Hmmm well wether or not there is a cap or not in 2010 and 11 dosent matter, if Campbell wants to sign a longer contract then he better show a LOT more progression this year, i know he did a lot last year, but there is still a lot he need to improve on. BUt saying that i hope, if he does do well enough to earn a new contract, then i hope he really means it!! and not just perform well because a new contract hangs in the fold!

Confirmed. It would probably end up (worst case scenario) as a lockout. (i.e. the owners locking out the players, as opposed to the players striking on the owners).

Re: Campbell Contract?

This is a big season coming up for Campbell, he has to put up bigger numbers and lead us to the playoffs.. His overall record does not help him either... 16-20 DESPITE HAVING DECENT NUMBERS... 35td's 23 Ints

Re: Campbell Contract?

i dont think jason is worth a new contract he has never taken the team to the playoffs or posted a winning record as a starter.it is painfull to watch but he is the starter so we have to support our team despite his average play

Re: Campbell Contract?

There is no way they should resign JC until the end of this season. If he does good he will command more $ but that has never stopped the Skins before. If he plays the way he has been playing they wont have to pay him much if they resign him or they could send him on his way. Bottom line, wait until the end of 2009 before doing anything with JC.

In my opinion, the skins need to decide right now how they feel about Campbell. I agree with mike wise and think it would be a big mistake to have him go into next season as our starter without a new contract. we need to do one of two things with him:

1) If Vinny and Zorn feel fairly good about him, sign him to a modest 3 year extension similar to what the Browns gave Derek Anderson.

2) If Vinny and Zorn DON'T feel good about him, or are undecided, trade him to a team like Chicago, Minnesota, or Carolina - Teams that only need a starting QB to take them to the next level and who have offenses that would effectively utilize Jasons talents.

Re: Campbell Contract?

Sign him before this season:

1) He’s been a team leader & patient w/all that’s been asked of him
2) He’s shown that when all other things are taken care of adequately, he can win games, e.g. the first half of this year
3) When things went south at the end of the year, he responded by running the ball more, i.e. doing whatever he could to win. Remember that his last play of the season was a touchdown run.
4) Maybe most importantly, letting him have a big year or even a decent year will draw big $ from somewhere else. There are more than a handful of teams willing to pay him right now.

Re: Campbell Contract?

He would come a lot cheaper now vs. later. I would at least open talks and see what he's willing to take. Plus it would be a nice sign of commitment from the team. He's well liked and respected in the locker room and he works hard.

Re: Campbell Contract?

We could sign him to a fairly modest multi-year contract with provisions to void years and/or pay him significant bonuses based on reaching certain performance provisions, such as reaching the pro-bowl (even though the pro-bowl is a joke).
