What other languages can you speak?
There is nothing cooler than speaking one or more foreign languages. It's awesome right? I am so impressed when a friend drops some rapid fire foreign lingo out of the blue, whether it's your buddy shooting the breeze in Vietnamese at your favorite local Pho shop, your Venezuluan roommate arguing with his mom about Chavez, or your kid sister haggling in French (all things I've witnessed at various times). It's just so cool! And how about a member of the opposite sex coming at you with some non-English? Forget about it, so hot.
So anyway, from the bilingual like Smoot to the stuttering untalented dufus like myself, let's talk about languages we can speak, are learning to speak, or want to learn to speak. I studied Latin in high school and Spanish in college; unfortunately, I never really took either seriously as anything more than a required class, and have subsequently forgotten everything I learned. I have been living in Japan for over 2 years and studying Japanese that whole time. They say it's the toughest language in the world and well I don't know if that's true, I can't imagine anything being harder, what with its 3 alphabets and reversed grammar. But the more I study, the more I am able to communicate with people who I would never know anything about otherwise - which has been the most rewarding part of being over here. |

Re: What other languages can you speak?
I spent a month traveling in Germany and picked up a fair amount of German. It is a pretty cool accomplishment when you first successfully communicate with a person in their language.

Re: What other languages can you speak?
I frequently butcher both the Spanish and German languages, but I still get my point across pretty effectively.

Re: What other languages can you speak?
Definitely.
I speak Spanish. Was pretty good at it until I stopped taking it late in high school. I apparently know enough to be exempt from taking it in college. I know very little Norwegian. (From an ex) I know some sign language. And of course, I speak Ebonics.

Re: What other languages can you speak?
Took 4 years of German and 2 years of Arabic. I don't get to practice them so I really don't KNOW any language beyond English. I'm sure I could pick them up if dropped of in Germany or Egypt.

Re: What other languages can you speak?
I wish I knew German. My wife's mother is from Germany and her brothers come here for a couple of weeks each summer. Its not much fun when 85% of the conversation is in German. They do know how to say "Budwiser" so we make due.

Re: What other languages can you speak?
I took a ton of Spanish in high school and early college, but now I remember about 3% of what I used to know.
I wish I could speak Spanish, and would also like to know a little German, Irish-Gaelic, and Japanese if I ever learned how to motivate myself. I've been thinking about getting the Rosetta Stone program for a couple of years now but I want to hear some first hand accounts about it first. Anyone here ever use it?
