Hoping for more Intermediate passing vs the Bengals?

I think/hope we'll see more intermediate(10+ yards) and downfield passing attempts and completions vs the Bengals.

The passing game has consisted mostly of 3-step drops which results in passes thrown less then 10 yards hitches, slants, screens. This has been effective for the most part and has helped us control the clock.

But, it puts alot of pressure on the offense unit to play mistake free football and sustain long drives. Also good defenses squat on the short passing game. They will play alot of underneath man or Cover 2 zone and take away the short stuff especially to Moss and Cooley. I think that Zorn and JC both want to go downfield more and have been trying to mix in more 5 & 7 step drops, but it seems that Zorn has been concerned about the pass-pro or lack thereof ( and rightfully so).

Aginst the Bengals i think/hope we'll be able to look downfield further then 10 yards because : (1) the Bengals stink (2) IMO the current offensive line of: Heyer@ LT, Fabini@ RT, will provide better pass-pro then an injured Samuels, (struggling/injured) Jansen.

Thoughts?

Jason Campbell passing attempts/completion by distance in the air:
Pass Thrown: Behind line 56-73
Pass Thrown: 1-10 yds. 166-251
Pass Thrown: 11-20 yds. 32-61
Pass Thrown: 21-30 yds. 6-16
Pass Thrown: 31-40 yds. 0-6
Pass Thrown: 41+ yds. 2-8

I've got an idea. How about we score more than one TD this week? We would have lot's to talk about then.

Yes, I'd like to see some resemblance of the 1st half of the season. Some deeps to Moss, some outs, some slants, some Cooley, and some TD's. Oh yeah, cranking up our run game wouldn't hurt.

i hope your right about getting some good pass pro this game, but i think if it happens its more about the bengals lack of pass rush then expecting 2 young non-starting tackles to play lights out. im excited to see what we do sunday.

on the 3 step drop thing i havent seen alot of that. maybe b/c JC doesnt get rid of the ball quick enough so it looks like he takes 3 steps, holds onto the ball, has to try and avoid pressure, takes some more steps, etc = just hard to tell if it was a 3 step drop b/c the ball doesnt come out after 3 steps.

id be interested to really see how many 3 step drop plays we call, then see why the balls not coming out right away? recievers, JC, pass pro? i thought this quick spread WCO passing scheme protects a weak o line b/c the ball is supposed be gone by the time the rushers can get to the qb.

0-6 in the 31-40 category. seems like they need to do nothing but practice that all day!

We did have a lot of plays involving Cooley earlier in the season. I would also like to see more of that. As far as Moss what a waste of talent. Very similar to Michael Westbrook. Go Skins!!!!!!

Even more than stretching the field, I would like to see some sustained drives for a change. It feels like forever since we had a game when there were multiple 8-10 play drives (for points).

Re: Hoping for more Intermediate passing vs the Bengals?

I suspect the Skins will run the ball down the Bengals' throats this week and pass only when they must...

Yupp I agree with SC, it's all about the run game. We aren't too great at passing, so let's just run and wear them out in the 3rd quarter.

A few turnovers will help too.

I agree with the run but JC needs some confidence in himself as well as his recievers. But yea the safest way to win this week is with the run.

In Santana's defense, Westbrook had a better offensive scheme that he worked under. I would gladly take the trio of Westbrook, Sheppard, and Connell, over the trio we have now also. WE might not have had the best records, but at least our offense could score with those guys and that scheme. Moss has had to deal with dink and dunk under Brunell, and almost the same thing under Zorn with JC. Moss is a classic Wideout who would have been killer had he played with Art Monk and the boys way back during Gibbs I.

I say throw our top 3 draft picks in all game.
It is the ideal time to get them to develop for next year.
If we win, great...if not, at least they get some experience.
Bench Portis again and shove a sock in his mouth.
Give the ball to Sellers, Rock and Betts.

Its time to become a head coach.

I'm not expecting them to play lights out, but they're both healthy and that alone is an improvement over Samuels and Jansen. Heyer is young but he was the starter @ RT before his injury and Fabini is a veteran with lots of starting experience.

He [Fabini] joined the Redskins in 2007 and played in 16 regular-season games with 13 starts at right guard
Fabini has appeared in 145 career games with 127 starts, mostly lining up at left tackle in his 10 NFL seasons.

Maybe that's what you see. But, i've seen alot of 3 step drop passing.
Sometimes the receivers aren't open because some teams are playing underneath coverage in effort to take the short passes away and JC has to hold the ball, then the pressure comes.

Hopefully this game won't provide a good example of the 3-step drop focus, because we'll try get the intermediate passing game going. But, i'd bet that we'll start off with the 3-step stuff and if you look at the previous games JC thows alot of hitches, slants an quick in-breaking routes from rhythm in a 3 step drop.

The 3 step drop (quick passing scheme) does protect a weak offense line that's why we do it soo much. And i wouldn't exactly call our offense a spread WCO because we rarely go 4-5 wide. Although i think we should, i would love to see more 4-5 wide and put JC in shotgun.

I like that idea(5 wide), but we don't have the horses yet to effectively go 5 wide. The rooks need to step up there game for us to do that or JC might end up getting killed. Hell, has Kelly even played in a game yet?

I'm hoping for some solid pass protection and the rest will take care of itself.
