Mason v. Rock
After watching the first preseason game Mason looked much better then Rock. This has been the story for the past two preseasons. If the redskins only go with 3 backs on the open day roster does Mason have a shot given all the extras that Rock brings to the team? Thoughts?

Re: Mason v. Rock
I wish we could keep Mason, but Rock plays a specific and valuable role on special teams therefore making it almost impossible for Mason to make the team instead of Rock.

Re: Mason v. Rock
I don't think they keep 4 RB's either. It's too bad because Mason appears to be a better fit for the running game that we run in DC. Could Betts possibly be on the way out? I've read on this site that he might be in jeopardy of getting cut.

Re: Mason v. Rock
Not a bad idea! I would stock piling a few draft picks for him. However, if we were going to do that we should've done it after his 1000 yard season. His value coming off last season is low. Plus, if CP gets hurt, I am much more comfortable with Ladell back there.

Re: Mason v. Rock
i'm not that big a fan of Betts... so i'm a little bias i guess but i like the idea of trading him for a few picks.

Re: Mason v. Rock
we have no idea how mason would do against actual starters in a regular season game. betts is proven in this league, mason is not. he had a good pre-season game, we should not jump to conclusions over one pre-season game. if portis were to go down, i would be extremely uncomfortable handing the run game over to someone who has no regular season experience and someone who hasnt run the ball in years in rock.

Re: Mason v. Rock
It's tough to trade Betts because he has proven to be a valuable back up in the past. However, the skins do have to ask themselves if they are willing to carry 4 RB's, cut Mason, cut Rock, or try and make a trade to an RB needy team. I don't think they can keep mason on the practice squad this year. The only way they do that is if they cut Devine...which I am all for! We don't need him as a 4th qb.

Edit: Shit I forgot it's a 53 man roster, not 55. Italics denote guys I cut after the fabled 55 man roster. Offense (in no particular order) - 25 Players QBJ. Campbell, T. Collins, C. Brennan RB C. Portis, L. Betts, R. Cartwright, M. Mason FBM. Sellers TEWR S. Moss, ARE, J. Thrash, M. Kelly, D. Thomas, A. Mix C. Cooley, F. Davis, T. Yoder OLJ. Jansen, C. Samuals, S. Heyer, J. Fabini, P. Kendall, R. Thomas, C. Rhinehart, C. Rabach Defense (in no particular order) - 25 Players DT C. Griffin, A. Montgomery, L. Alexander, K. Golston DE SJ. Taylor, A. Carter, C. Wilson, D. Evans, E. James LB M. Washington, R. McIntosh, K. Campbell, M. Sinclair, L. Fletcher, H. Blades CB S. Springs, F. Smoot, J. Tryon, C. Rogers, L. Torrence R. Doughty, C. Horton, L. Landry, K. Moore, V. Fox K/P/LS - 3 Players S. Shuisam, D. Brooks, E. Albright Practice Squad Maurice Mann (WR), B. Westbrook (CB), Nemo (FB), C. Gatewood (LB), A. Crummey (C/G), R. Jackson (DE), Martell Richardson (CB) Possible Midseason Callbacks Due to Injury M. Askew (DT), R. Boschetti (DT), Billy McMullen (WR), Jason Goode (TE), So as you can see it's very possible for Mason to win a roster spot. Also in this scenario Wade and Askew got cut so those are two that could easily change some time during the year. Boschetti also gets cut.

Re: Mason v. Rock
I love Mason's speed and slitherin style, I hope they keep both. This battle will last throught out the exhibiton season, if Mason shows this on a consistent basis then find a place for him, make a roster spot.

Re: Mason v. Rock
good question. I think because rock brings a good kick return, and great st'er overall, he'll take up any questionable roster spot. mason has shined every time he's had a shot, though. I think he may have a chance to be a great backup, and if we had someone that could return kicks and cover like rock, it may be considered.
trading betts... i don't know if we could get enough value for him. he's a good running back, but i don't know if anyone would give up a second for him...
