MMQB: King is "smitten" with Jason Campbell
1. I think I am smitten with Jason Campbell. The guy's going to be good. Maybe really good. He's sure of himself, throws a nice, soft spiral downfield -- harder when he has to -- and is more confident and self-assured than anyone learning an eighth offensive system in his last nine years of football has the right to be.
(True fact. Dating to his senior year in high school, Campbell has had to learn eight offenses -- and this is the first time he's been in some form of the West Coast offense since high school. I defy anyone who watched the Redskins practice on Friday to say they don't think this guy's got the tools to be great. Four or five times in a row he threw passes 20 yards or longer in wideout-versus-corner passing drills, and each time he hit the receiver in perfect stride. Now, he's not throwing those passes with Jason Taylor and Andre Carter planning to steamroll him, because quarterbacks aren't touched by teammates in July. Will he be All-Ashburn instead of All-Pro? Maybe. But this display was one of the best I've seen at a summer practice in a long, long time. More... |

Fun Read!
I was fortunate to be at JC's debut in Tampa Bay a couple years ago. He did not play stellar, nor did we win the game (even though we had the oppurtunity). What did strike you is his COOL in the pocket. He was unshakeable even with the Defense swarming around him, and being chased several times that day. NO happy feet! Eyes downfield, doing his checkdown. I thought that was big......still do

I think we all have seen some glimpses of what JC brings to the table. The poise and calmness displayed in the pocket with pressure all around him....I think given some consistency we might see JC finally break out. He has the tools and the weapons around him to be a successful NFL qb...lets just hope Zorn is the man to get the most out of him. Based on all I have read and seen of the interaction between the two in the offseason I have to believe Zorn will be able to get JC's best out of him. As for this PK artilce....kinda strange to see him doing something besides bashing us.

I thought that Campbell ran the WCO during his senior year at Auburn.

Re: MMQB: King is "smitten" with Jason Campbell
What's with all the love from King lately? I'm not quite sure how to react to it.
Anyways, if JC hits the big-time, I'd say Gibbs' second legacy was a major success from a personnel standpoint. Players acquired by Gibbs: 1.) Sean Taylor 2.) Chris Cooley 3.) Jason Campbell 4.) LaRon Landry 5.) Clinton Portis 6.) Santana Moss 7.) Rocky McIntosh 8.) Cornelius Griffin The jury is still out on a few, but the future is promising. I'd also say the Bailey and Dockery situations were great FO moves. We were able to replace Bailey with Springs, and Dockery with Kendall. We didn't lose much quality, and we were able to save money (i.e.: Kendall), and acquire additional players (i.e.: Portis). I think our core group is young and talented. Just a few more key players on defense, and some maturing for JC, and we'll be a playoff team for several years to come.

That is really something coming from PK. I'm glad to see that he is so high on JC.

Don't forget about the older guys like Marcus Washington, London Fletcher, Shawn Springs, Andre Carter, Casey Rabach, and Mike Sellers.

Re: MMQB: King is "smitten" with Jason Campbell
This is reallly good news, but it inevitably leads me to a couple of questions. First, was Bill Lazor simply overwhelmed coaching Campbell. Not to put any blame on Lazor, but it's common for us to say Gibbs held Campbell back-and I'm sure that's true to an extent-but where does Lazor's influence (or lack thereof) come into play.
My second question is how much time is Zorn spending with Campbell. Obviously he's spending some time with him based on Campbell's peformance in camp so far, and the fact that one of Zorn's many jobs is QB coach. However, I hope that Zorn isn't doing this (coaching the QB, as that is what he is most comfortable with) at the expense of his bigger role as head coach.

Re: MMQB: King is "smitten" with Jason Campbell
Maybe Zorn is just pushing the right buttons with JC, or maybe this offense just suits him better? Who knows really. As long as JC plays well I don't care who is coaching him.
