Lions Release DE Kalimba Edwards
Just saw that that Lions cut DE Kalimba Edwards. Don't know about you guys but if he can come cheap I think he would be a good veteran to line up opposite A. Carter.

Re: DE Edwards
I'll pass on Edwards, he is being cut by the Lions for a reason, injury issues. What didn't he play half the season last year?

Re: Lions Release DE Kalimba Edwards
Is this guy a pass rush specialist or every down guy?
I'm not really familiar with him

Re: Lions Release DE Kalimba Edwards
From Scouts Inc.
2007 Scouting Report - Scouts Inc. Grade: 68 | Key Alert: UB Comment: Edwards has a very good combination of speed and athleticism. He has fluid change-of-direction skills, explosive burst and an impressive motor. He continues to develop his awareness. He is a pure speed rusher who also has the ability to drop into a zone or even play some man-to-man. He has great snap anticipation and an explosive first step. He immediately puts an offensive tackle on his heels. He has the speed to accelerate in a high arc, squeezing the pocket and closing on the quarterback quickly. He has a strong up-and-under counter when a tackle overplays his outside rush. He plays with leverage against the run and has good functional strength for his size. He battles and has reasonable success at the point of attack. He is excellent in pursuit and makes many plays from the back side. But Edwards is undersized. He gets engulfed or overpowered too often. He can be undisciplined, running around blocks and opening up holes in the defense. He sometimes plays too upright and can be knocked off course by a powerful swat. His work ethic has been questioned at times. http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/playe...g?statsId=5921

Re: Lions Release DE Kalimba Edwards
He is what worries me about drafting either a WR or DE in the NFL Draft. Kalimba Edwards was a highly rated DE coming out of college and was thought by many to become a star pass rusher in the NFL.
I'm worried about this #21 pick. It's a crapshoot.

Re: Lions Release DE Kalimba Edwards
That can be said about pretty much any position in the NFL Draft. Some guys have good careers and some don't. Since none of them have played at the Pro level, teams are drafting based on a persons potential to be a good player. You can have all of the potential in the world, but you still have to work hard and develop. Nobody steps into the league as a Hall of famer.

However, the teams that do their due dilligence every year, come prepared to deal with unlikely situations and stick to their draft plans no matter what usually end up landing contributors in the early rounds every year. Therefore, it's not really a crapshoot. It is for some teams, but for other's it's about placing the chips where the percentages best say you will get a return on them.

Re: Lions Release DE Kalimba Edwards
it's really not a crapshoot, unless you go with the hype (mike williams, etc)
if you do your research, you can't eliminate busts, but you can make your % much lower than the average (50% on DEs in the first round, almost exactly). kalimba at super cheap, is better than our backups. outside of that, he's really not someone we need to spend money on, since his injury history and lack of production precludes him starting here. |
