How to tune a guitar?

I have been playing the drums and piano for years and now I am trying to teach myself to play the guitar (i am left handed but have a right handed guitar) and I have one question.

How do I tune this crap?

Shameless self-promotion. It is what it is.

Re: How to tune a guitar?

Either

1) Buy a tuner

or two

Tune your top E string (the thick one) to a piano or other instrument first. After you have tuned this correctly, hold down the fifth fret of the same string, and tune the next one to this sound. That is your "A" note. Tune the rest in order as shown

E (hold down 5th fret to tune A)
A (after tuning correctly to an A, hold down 5th fret to tune your D)
D (hold down fifth to tune your G)
G (this is the one that's different. Instead of holding down the 5th fret to tune your B, you instead hold down the forth fret in order to produce a B sound which you can then tune your B string)
B (Finally, hold down the fifth fret, and tune this to your E)
E

Hope this helps.

Re: How to tune a guitar?

Rob's right, but I would just get a tuner. Tuning your guitar is something you will have to do often. You might as well just get a tuner to save you some trouble.

Good luck with the guitar! As I am sure you know, learning and playing an instrument is highly satisfying.

Re: How to tune a guitar?

Why tune it if you don't know how to play it.

Great answer!

I suggest you buy an electric tuner. You pluck each sting and it will tell you how to tune it. It's very quick, and super easy.
