Anyone realize that the Skins "system" Free agents are ROCKIN?
Look at these guys below.
These are "system" guys that may not do as well on other teams but the Skins brought them all here because they supposedly would do well within the Skins system. They all are doing great...Fletcher has been smooth as glass...but who expected Collins to do this well? There were some doubts about Smoot too but he is also doing great. Are there others? London Fletcher (Williams Buffalo D) Fred Smoot (man coverage vs that Vikings zone crap) Todd Collins (KC offense) Have the Skins learned their lesson from trying to change Archuletta? Have they learned from losing system guys like Antonia Pierce and Ryan Clark? The only "non-system" guy that I can think of that has done well here is Portis. That guy was a zone blocking RB...we actually changed our blocking schemes to fit him! What does everyone think? Are our days of trying to put a square peg in a round hole gone?

There are system guys throughout the league and everyone knows this but as a team you have to be able to find the players for your system and sometimes you end up taking chances in hopes the person works out for you. I belive that Gibbs system was more different than Saunders system then people realize. I belive that Gibbs system called for man on man blocking and the team started getting this system down the second year he was here. Then you bring in Saunders system which I belive has more zone blocking and the line was horrible last year trying to learn a new system or blending the two systems somehow. This year the line looked alot better except for injuries. Portis did have to learn a new style of running. He even gained weight to support the system. Then they brought in Saunders and Portis was to slow for the zone blocking. Which is why I belive Portis lost weight this year to try and get his speed back.

everyone is a "system" player in some respects.
randy moss played terribly in the sucky-QB system, for example. |

I hope we're passed the round hole, square peg mentality. Adaptation to individual skill sets was one of Joe's first real bright ideas. And he did it better than most in his former life.
The other being making the single back system a legitimate way to do business in the NFL. London Fletcher is my hero. I seriously love the pulse he gives our defense. |

i totally agree. i was against bringing Fletcher here( because of his age) but last years defense was bottom 5. i think this years is ranked 12th in the whole league

I would love to get a "system" guy who can rush the passer (DE or DT). Not sayin we haven't improved our pass rush this year, but we could truly be elite if we had some good rushers.

I say give Wilson and Buzbee another year and draft a DE with our first pick and you will see this next year.

mario williams was on the shorter end of that, a guy like kampman on the higher end. plus drafted DEs tend to be very hit or miss (50% or so in the 1st round) vs any other (non-QB, non-WR) position. |
