NFL Network - How Could Any Team Have Passed on Peterson in the 07 Draft?

Just finished listening to Adam Schefter on NFLN. He stated his belief that all the teams that passed on Adrian Peterson in the 07 draft are rueing the day, including the Washington Redskins. Not to say that Peterson isn't the real deal, but come on...Thoughts?

His line is helping him GREATLY. He has great talent and needs a dominant line to show that off. In Green Bay or Dallas he would have rushed for 2000 yards by now.

We have CP and he's no chump. I am very satisfied with the Landry pick...the Vikings can have Peterson.

I saw that too and it was a stupid comment. They said that the only team that wouldn't regret taking Peterson was the Cleveland Browns. In actuality the Browns were one of the only teams that might have taken him. I guess you could say that the Raiders should have taken him, but they NEEDED a QB in a bad way, I guess the Lions could have taken him but Martz didn't even run when he had Marshall Faulk, the Bucs already took Cadillac in 2005, the Cardinals paid Edge big money in 2006, and the Skins had Portis and Betts coming off an 1,154 yard season. Imagine the uproarious laughter if the Skins had taken Peterson to add to Portis and Betts. How ridiculous. It was a worthless commentary that meant absolutely nothing. Once Cleveland passed on Peterson at #3 you figured he would fall to at least #7 unless someone like Buffalo moved up to get him.

Peterson still might end up with a career that looks more like Hershel Walker (another physical marvel who struggled with injuries) rather than Walter Payton.

Sure, it's easy to say now.

Where was Schefter on draft day with this take? That I would have been impressed with.

Hey... check out my Schefter brilliance. How did anyone pass on Dan Marino??

I saw that bit. Given what happened to the Skins this year, I'd take Landry over Petersen.

Well, I think that one team that still would have taken there original pick would be the Redskins. In light of Taylor's death, it was the best choice.
Hind sight is 20/20. I thought Casserly was the biggest idiot for not taking Bush. Although, he resigned, I think he was forced out for that decision. Now look at that draft, he not only picked the best player in the draft, in Mario Williams, but he also stole Demico Ryans in the second round. Now he looks like a genious. In fact, I wish the Redskins would give him a job in some capacity.

Not to mention our backup last season had 1,000+ yards rushing in half a season. So yeah, I don't regret not taking All Day any day.

But I guess the thought would be that we would have drafted Peterson and then tried to trade Betts (who's value was at a peak around draft time) or CP for either more picks or the DB we absolutely needed.

(For the record, I'm happy with Landry and I'd still like to see how Peterson's body holds up over the course of a few years before I crown'im)

Well yeah, drafting AP and trading him or Betts for additional picks would have been fine. But I don't think Schefter is factoring a trade. He's just saying he thinks we wish Peterson was on our roster (over Landry I suppose) and I just don't see that.

Re: NFL Network - How Could Any Team Have Passed on Peterson in the 07 Draft?

Also, the career longevity expectancy for a RB in the NFL is about 5 minutes. He could blow up his knee at any moment and never recover. I've come around to the view that you want a solid RB, but it's not as though any one guy will suddenly give you a ground game. If Petersen were running behind a shitty O-Line, then no one would be talking about him. Very few backs fail behind that sort of blocking.

You know a running back that goes against this grain? Westbrook from Philly. There's a guy that gains yards on his own. If he were running behind Minnesota's line, I'd bet he'd already have 2000 yards.

Pretty easy for ANYONE to Monday morning or Thursday evening QB at this point....come on.

I think we did much better than OK with LL.

Re: NFL Network - How Could Any Team Have Passed on Peterson in the 07 Draft?

I think the SKins took the right player in Landry even if Sean taylor were alive today. Those two were forming an elite dou that made receivers fear going over the middle.

As far as running backs go - I am more on the side of building a great line first and most running backs can be found in later rounds - I think the Broncos showed this for years. Plus if you focus on building a strong line you can help your qb as well.

Look at James since he joined the Cardinals - he has not averaged over 4 yards a carry since joining the Cardinals and has 6 tds in 06 and 6 in 07 - far lower than when he was with the Colts.

Running backs have a shorter life span than most other positions in the NFL because of all the wear and tear they take on a weekly basis. Is this something as a GM you would want to throw a massive signing bonus on which a high round pick requires - I think not. Most scouts would take an elite corner, LT of DE over a running back any day because these positions are hard to find great players.
