Reche Caldwell and Keenan McCardell: 2008 Plans?

Just to get away from the game a little bit, and to think about our WR situation for the future. Does anyone else think that McCardell might have one more year and that maybe we should extend Caldwell a couple years?

If ARE returns healthy and we cut Lloyd, we'll still have a pretty good stable of receivers.

A lot of people are talking about taking a receiver in the draft, but this looks pretty good to me. McCardell has been a great possession receiver and Caldwell has caught almost everything throw his way so far.

100% agree. No need for any new WRs. With Moss, El, Caldwell, McCardell (not to mention Thrash and possibly Espy) we have 4-6 talented and more importantly hard-working, no nonsense WRs. This should be our WR core and they should work with Campbell in the offseason and strengthen their chemistry with him.

That's what I wanted to see the most. With the offense finally opening up, I think we invest our draft picks into offensive line and a DE. I think with the picks we FINALLY have this year, we should hopefully have a very light year in free agency and maybe SAVE some money this year.

According to a lot of the draft sites, we could get the best OG available in the middle to late second round.

I'd like to see one of them back--probably McCardell. But we do need to draft a young wideout--maybe 3rd round and hope that he develops. He would at least have a decent set of mentors in Moss, ARE, and McCardell. And I would say he needs to be a burner, regardless if he is a "big" or not. We need more explosive players on offense--we have one in Moss and that's it. The Skins have zero offensive TDs > 40yards for the Skins at this point. We need at least one greyhound in this poodle offense if we want to have some explosive plays.

Re: Reche Caldwell and Keenan McCardell: 2008 Plans?

I disagree that it makes a good stable of WRs. I think it makes a serviceable stable of WRs.

We've got the speed to stretch the field, and we've got the savvy to find holes in zones, and we've got good route-runners. That's why we're able to move between the 20s so well. But we stall when we hit the red zone, and that's why we need a big one. We have no red zone threat with ARE and Moss being so small. When the field shortens, they don't have the room to use their speed. We need a WR who can outleap DBs on fade routes and fade-stops, and we need one who can actually shield the ball with his body.

Just one is needed. And he can't just be big like Mix is, he's got to be fast enough and a good enough route runner to represent a real threat. It would make a good complement to the guys we have.

All that said, I think we have bigger needs. We're getting old in a lot of spots. Griffin, Springs, Washington, Jansen, Randy Thomas, they're all getting old. Some/all can still be effective when healthy but we need to build depth behind them.

We also desperately need a free safety :-(

I agree w/you except on the first point; we don't have the speed to stretch the field, w/the exception of Moss no one else seems able to get separation on deep patterns.

Re: Reche Caldwell and Keenan McCardell: 2008 Plans?

I really started thinking yesterday that we need to go out this offseason and get a big time WR in here.

Sorry, but Moss just isn't a go to guy you can count on game in and game out. We need a true star at WR, a guy that Campbell can grow with and have that special chemistry with. Right now we have a bunch of #2 and #3 WRs.

We do have a go to guy at TE in Cooley, but we need a go to guy at WR to really make this offense dangerous.

Put me on the WR bandwagon for this offseason.

Does anyone know what free agents will be available?

Bernard Berrian, Patrick Crayton, Bryant Johnson, maybe Matt Jones. Those are the first names that come to mind

What about Randy Moss? I'm putting him out there and I'm sure many will question picking him up. But the fact is he is having an outstanding season and compared to anyone we could possible get--he is a bonafide superstar Pro Bowl #1. Thoughts?

The Patriots always seem to have a never-ending money flow. He'll come back there again.

well personally i think that if we were to get a WR during the offseason, that id would have to be in the 2nd or 3rd round of the draft. maybe a guy like maurice purify of of Nebraska or James Hardy out of Indiana.

our WR group is good and i think there is no need to draft anyone early out of the draft.

but if either mccardell of caldwell stick around, there will no need to draft a WR.

Andre Johnson of the Houston Texans is a free agent this offseason (we seem to like the Miami thing and Johnson is a flat out stud). Only thing is I don't we have the cap room flexilibity with all the impending things with both sides of the line getting old and Andre Johnson will probably be getting somewhere in the range of a $10 million bonus.

Funny, that's what people say about us!

I don't think WR is a #1 priority this offseason.. I think in Saunders offense, with our WR corp (assuming Caldwell and McCardell or Thrash is kept around) and Cooley, we have enough playmakers to compete week in/week out. Berrian, Crayton, Jones, Johnson are just guys, nothing special.. Unless we can somehow get an elite (A. Johnson, Wayne, etc.) WR then we should focus elsewhere.

If that's all that will be available, Washington may need to work a trade(as much as I hate giving away draft picks). They need to find a way to steal one of the young freaks from Detroit or Arizona.
