OK GW.....release the hounds!

Ok, it used to be that our D blitzed on every other down, if not every down. This season, we sit back and wait for the pick. I for one am ready for some BLITZIN!!!! Especially with a rookie QB. ATTENTION GW:

Re: OK GW.....release the hounds!

GW plays the zone this season. Im not really sure why or what made him switch but if you notice the Skins D plays the zone all the time now. I hate it. Its not the only reason the Pats torched us but it has alot to do with it. Forget playing off the reciever, man up put the corner on the line to bump the wideout and blitz using anyone and everyone. If after a quarter or two and its not working then go back to the zone. I personally think the D would play so much better in man. Let the safeties split the field and go at it. But yet again I bet they play man.

I don't know. I thought we were looking pretty good until we went against what people are calling maybe the best team ever. Don't forget we didn't do a lot to establish field position in that game either.

i dont think we have the ability to play man to man an entire game with our corners.

I like the cover 2, while I'd like to see us mix it up a bit. Besides last game, our D has looked great.

yeah, we've looked pretty good until last week , but id still like to see some more pressure myself...

our front four is okay, but they ain't exactly lights out, and with smoot hurt and rogers out, he's gonna have to start pressuring throws in order to keep guys from popping open after a few seconds...

Re: OK GW.....release the hounds!

I'm not so enamored with our defense.
Yes, we played well against teams early in the zone....that only works when you are playing teams that play mistake prone football.
Dropped passes, penalties, bad passes, etc has stopped a lot of those early season drives.

The defense they are currently playing depends on the offense making these sorts of mistakes. Yes, every team makes these mistakes, even the Pats....those are the drives that dont end up in scores....it is not neccesarily that the Skins are playing lights out defense....their defense is pretty predicable right now. I think that is what is bugging us.

There was a time when the Redskins took chances...last year it burned them on D...perhaps GW is just as scared of taking chances as Gibbs.

The time to try blitzing more was last week, especially late.
They were gunna score anyways...why not make them pay or fear that they would get blitzed from any angle....they didn't which it was so easy to pick appart a standard scheme. And if you think a young QB doesn't hasn't been thoroghly coached on how to attach our scheme...you are crazy.

The only thing unpredictable about our defense is the blitz....and we dont do that anymore.

I expect our defensive ranking to slowly decline unless blitzing is significantly increased

I don't think we need to significantly increase the blitzing but sending an extra linebacker or Landry every once in a while should be enough to keep their offense on their toes.

Re: OK GW.....release the hounds!

I'm amazed that people can criticize our defense at this point in the season. It has been nothing short of spectacular outside of the Patriots game.

I have no idea why you would want to do a single thing differently against any team not from New England.

WTF?

Some people are never happy no matter what. Last year it was too much blitzing, this year it's not enough.

Outside of last week the D has been great. It's the offense that needs to start carrying it's weight around here.

Re: OK GW.....release the hounds!

You can't be too critical of our D up until last week, even then they just got worn out.

I was however disappointed w/GW's game plan v. the pats. It seemed that he didn't throw any blitzes at them. I know there are tons of ways to mix up coverages to give the qb a different look and try to confuse him, but play after play if he knows you're only sending 4 & his linemen can handle it (which they did save for Daniels' coverage sack), then he's going to scan the field & you know somebody is open. Our corners did a great job against NE, it was the underneath stuff that killed us.

I really feel like GW would approach the Pats entirely differently if given a second chance. I sure hope that Gibbs didn't give him orders not to blitz at all.

This week, let Laron & Rocky have at least a few shots at the young qb!

My previous post has some constructive criticism. I do think we'll have to send some more blitzes to at least pose the threat & force offenses to keep more guys in.

Overall though, I agree w/you, our D has been about as good as anyone could've expected & that includes Gw's game plans. I just think we could've thrown some different stuff at Brady. He nickel & dimed us down the field.

Blitzing Tom Brady really is the last thing you want to do. Of all the QBs in the league, he's by far the coolest under pressure. He stays poised and delivers the ball to his outlet, or stares down the rush and launches a bomb over your head. You've got to be patient and try to shut down his WRs, and hope your front 4 can get there.

Really against the Pats, you're damned if you blitz and nearly as damned if you don't. They're just at a whole other level. They put up 49 or whatever against Dallas, so don't read much into it. The Pats are just awesome; it doesn't necessarily say we stink on D.

Andre Carter has been all over opposing QBs this year. In the Cardinals game, which was only a week before the Pats game mind you, the front 4 was ALL OVER Warner and forced 3 turnovers. We didn't blitz in that game.

I'm not against a well-timed blitz here and there, but it's hard to argue against GW's formula this year. We're getting sacks, we're getting turnovers, and we're even getting points on defense (London Fletcher, Carlos Rogers TDs). Sean Taylor leads (or is tied for the league lead) in INTs.

I wouldn't change a thing, personally.
