Top 5 All-Time Head Coaches?
My fascination with George Allen and the recent passing of Bill Walsh have inspired me to think about who the top all-time pro football head coaches are.
Here's my list, in order of ascending greatness. 5. Tom Landry 4. Bill Walsh 3. Paul Brown 2. Vince Lombardi 1. George Allen Who's in your Top 5? |

You got Allen number 1? No way! I think we could split hairs on the other four all day, but Allen isn't that high. Maybe top 25..maybe...

Yeah this is a duplicate thread, which I'd like to boycott. But I can't let it go without saying one thing...
You have George Allen ranked ahead of Joe Gibbs? Huh??

Don Shula didn't make your top 5 huh? He's only the winningest coach of all time.

Hey, Schneed we agree on something today. I liked Allen but he does not hit the top 5 all time and to have him and not Gibbs I don't understand.

Re: Top 5 All-Time Head Coaches?
George Allen the head coach (innovator, visionary, defensive genius, special teams architect and motivator par excellence) is #1 on my list. I think that George Allen the Future Is Now GM picking up older players that started producing results immediately but often physically lost steam towards the end of the season may have prevented George Allen the great coach from reaching the heights he otherwise would have.
Tom Landy was a very good coach and also deserves credit for being a good foil and motivational tool for George Allen, even if he wasn't the coach that George Allen was. Gibbs is quite good, probably 7th or 8th all time on my list. I'd actually prefer to use a George Allen avatar but I couldn't find one here - shows how little Skins fans appreciate the greatness of George Allen. Apologies for not noticing the previous thread on great coaches, I was too busy being the CEO of my big international company and also spending some extra time in the laboratory working on a cure for cancer. |

Clutch, what's with your recent obsession with George Allen? Are you writing a book or something?

1. Vince Lombardi
2. Tom Landry 3. Paul Brown 4. Bill Walsh 5. Chuck Noll Gibbs 1.0 might have snuck into the discussion, but Gibbs 2.0 has been as ordinary as pre-New England Belichik was in Cleveland. |
